The incumbent will serves a Dental Assistant on a rotating basis providing a full scope of assistance to dentists in the following area specialties; Fixed and removable prosthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, Oral Surgery, General dentistry, Oral Diagnosis, Central Sterilization room and X-ray. Assist the dentist in the treatment of patients requiring complex restorative and difficult oral surgery, oral pathology, prosthodontic, periodontal, endodontic, pedodontic or orthodontic treatments. Observes dentists performing the operation and be able to recognize each state of the procedure in order to furnish materials and services in an accurate and timely manner. Experience with various X—ray developing methods to process all types of exposed radiographic film and sufficient skill to operate and adjust equipment. Assist in taking biopsies and tissue samples for dental procedures. Observes patients during treatments to detect signs of syncope, shock or other side reactions.

OCCUPATIONAL TASK STATEMENTS:
1. Assist dentist in treatment of patients in oral surgery, oral pathology, prosthodontic, peridontic, endodontic, pedodontic or orthodontic treatments.
2. Receive & schedule patients for treatment in dental clinic &/or operating room.
3. Obtains & records information related to medical history of patient, routes patients for medical tests & services when required.
4. Obtains & stores dental & special supplies.
5. Prepares sterile trays & packs for a wide variety of dental procedures.
6. Cleans & sterilizes materials & equipment & maintains dental equipment in a clean, operative condition.
7. Operates dental X-ray equipment to include taking routine & specialized radiographs such as panoramic & cephalometric & develops/finishes film.
8. Makes impressions for preliminary casts & to duplicate existing prostheses; makes master casts for fixed dental restorations; pours & trims casts for removable partial & full dentures; removes sutures & dressings; debrides surgical site & replaces dressings when directed.
9. Constructs custom impressions, X-rays, base plates & wax rims.
10. Prepares patients for & assists dentist in the operating room, sets up instruments, equipment & materials per sterile requirements.
11. Obtains & records patient vital signs.
12. Assist dentist while patient is under intravenous sedation; assist in the placement of sutures; apply desensitizing agents; retract & stabilize tissue; illuminate the area of operation & keep it free of debris.
13. Takes bacterial cultures, cytologic smears, stains & performs vitality testing of pulp.
14. Checks for loose &/or broken appliances, sizes, fits bands & makes tracing of cephalometric head plates.
15. Assist in the fabrication & insertion of appliances i.e. space maintainers, habit appliances, etc.
16. Relays instruction to patients from dentist for post-treatment care including care & use of headgear, retainers, preventive maintenance measure's, oral hygiene instructions & use of prescribed medications.
17. Records treatment & examination on patient records, prepares consent forms for special procedures & prepares laboratory prescription forms for signature of the dentist.
18. Prepares & maintains various dental records & annual dental reports.
19. Do you meet Public Law 97-35 requirements as described in the qualifications section of this announcement? (Persons who administer radiologic procedures must meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, & (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.)

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level grade level in the Federal service is: Specialize experience in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to the position being filled.
Education may be substituted for experience as follows: Degree Bachelors or successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in a dental assistant or dental hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hours in the following courses: radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting; or (b) practical nurse training approved by the appropriate State, territory, or District of Columbia accrediting body.
Applicants substituting education for experience must include in their resume the college/university attended, type and year of degree received, the major field of study, and the total number of quarter/semester hours earned.
