Responsible for coordinating activities and providing clinical direction to the VISN 19 MIRECC outpatient suicide consult service.  Performs comprehensive evaluations for patients with complicated histories of suicidality.  Provides a full range of psychodiagnostic services including both neuropsychological and psychological assessment.  Uses neuropsychological constructs, such as executive functioning, to conceptualize suicidal patients and form treatment recommendations.  Conducts assessment appropriate to individual patient with attention to the functional implications of test results and successful treatment/management of suicidal behavior.  Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions with a strong emphasis on evidence-based models of care.  The assessment and care provided accommodate to the developmental, cognitive, emotional, and diversity needs of the patients served.  Assumes responsibility for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation.  Participates in psychology peer review.  Provides clinical supervision including supervision of psychodiagnostic services.  Supports activities of Psychology Training Program and participates in relevant educational seminars.  Assists in formulation of the neuropsychological and psychological characteristics of suicidal individuals.  Assists in appropriate treatment planning regarding suicidal patients.  Develop and maintain an independent program of research in the areas known to contribute to veteran suicide.  Participates in planning of measurement, gathering and analysis of outcome data to guide MIRECC outpatient suicide consult service.  Consult with VA colleagues as needed on issues of research design, data analysis, and interpretation.  Prepare research results and study protocols for publication in scientific journals and for presentation at local, national and international scientific meetings.  Develop research grants and submission to appropriate public and private agencies.  Provide research supervision as needed to postdoctoral fellows and interns assisting with studies.

The assessment and care provided accommodate to the developmental, cognitive, emotional, and diversity needs of the patients served.

·        Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues related to reducing suicide risk.·        Assumes responsibility for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation.·        Maintains ongoing scholarly and self-education activities.·        Participates in psychology peer review.

Training



Provides clinical supervision to interns and post-doctoral fellows including supervision of psychodiagnostic services.

Supports activities of Psychology Training Program and participates in relevant educational seminars.

Participates in improvement of clinical supervision skills.

Serves as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees.  Assists in their formulation of the neuropsychological and psychological characteristics of suicidal individuals.  Assists in appropriate treatment planning regarding their suicidal patients.

Research·        Develop and maintain an independent program of research in the areas known to contribute to veteran suicide.·        Serve as an active and collaborative member of the VISN 19 MIRECC.·        Participates in planning of measurement, gathering and analysis of outcome data to guide MIRECC outpatient suicide consult service.·        Consult with VA colleagues as needed on issues of research design, data analysis, and interpretation.·        Prepare research results and study protocols for publication in scientific journals and for presentation at local, national and international scientific meetings.·        Develop research grants and submission to appropriate public and private agencies.·        Provide research supervision as needed to postdoctoral fellows and interns assisting with studies.

7.  Copy of current licensure as a Psychologist.

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:



Citizenship:  Must be a citizen of the United States.



Licensure:  Licensure.  Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.



Exception:   The Secretary may waive the requirement of licensure for an individual psychologist for a period not to exceed 2 years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is so licensed.  Non-licensed psychologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D).  Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment.  This may result in termination of employment.    



Education:   Applicants must have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).  The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.   



In addition, applicants must have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.  Exceptions: (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement.



English Language Proficiency:  If you are appointed to a direct patient care position, you must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d).



Employees who occupy a Testing Designated Position are subject to random testing for drugs. All Non-VA applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in any designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.  Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.



EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:



For GS-12:  In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least 1 year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level.  Individuals assigned as GS-12 psychologists may be in the process of obtaining licensure at the independent practice level.  If unlicensed, the individual must be supervised by a licensed psychologist and the experience and supervision must meet the standards for psychology licensure.



For GS-13:  In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least 2 additional years of experience as a psychologist.  At least one additional year of experience as a psychologist must be equivalent to the next lower grade level.  In addition, applicants must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.



DESIRABLE FACTORS:  Applicants have experience in applying advanced psychological theories and techniques to the treatment of suicidal persons, including those with a history of significant medical issues.  Applicants also have experience in providing professional advice and consultation in the assessment, treatment, and prevention of suicide.  Experience focusing on individuals with a history of co-occurring medical problems (i.e., Traumatic Brain Injury) is desirable.
