The Human Resources Office, Glacier National Park is soliciting applications for the purpose of filling the temporary position listed above. The area of consideration is ALL SOURCES.


Should a vacancy occur in St. Mary, MT. we will use this vacancy announcement to fill the position.


Under Executive Order 11935, only United States citizens and nationals (residents of American Samoa and Swains Island may compete for civil service jobs.


These are temporary positions not to exceed 1039 hours in a service year.  Posiitons may exceed this limitation if workload dictates and funding allows.  Positions are expected to be fille approzimately May through September.  Work schedule will be 40 hours per week either 5 8-hour days or 4 10-hour days per week.  Weekend and/or holiday work may be required.

AREA LOCATION:


Duty location is West Glacier: West Glacier, Montana has seasonal food and gas services. All services are available in Columbia Falls (17 miles), Kalispell (32 miles) or Whitefish (28 miles).



 


Duty location is St. Mary: St. Mary, Montana has seasonal food and gas services.  Most amenities are available in Browning, Montana (35 miles).  Medical facilities are available in Browning and Cardston, Alberta, Canada (31 miles).


 


Government housing may be available. Housing is generally shared, either in single dwellings or dormitory style. Deductions for government quarters are made from the employee's paycheck.

Major Duties


Assembles and packages all types of cargo, packs a wide variety of cargo such as tandem packing lumber, doors, bridge decking, culverts, cook stoves, refrigerators, furniture, wheel barrows, bed springs and frames, electronic equipment, roofing, prefabricated pit toilets, hay, etc. Loads and hitches packed supplies and equipment onto pack animals, balances and adjusts side packs.   Grooms, shoes, feeds, waters and provides medical care to stock. Maintains equipment in good repair, leads strings of 6-9 animals, and drives trucks under 26,000 lb GVW with 6 speed transmissions and 2 speed axles.
 
Physical Demands:
Position involves walking, bending, riding horses for long hours. Selectee will be required to lift, carry and secure awkward loads (often heavy) onto the sides of animals at or above chest height, and use arms to hold packs in position while hitching ropes. Selectee must be able to adjust these loads along the trail in steep, rocky, or other poor footing situations with little room to maneuver. While preparing loads, selectee is constantly required to bend, squat, twist, lift and load loads onto trucks for transport. Position requires good physical stamina and strength in arms, back and legs to perform these repetitive tasks safely and efficiently. Selectee will be required to undergo an arduous duty physical examination. Employment is contingent on passing this physical.

I have at least one season of work experience in a professional animal packing operation on backcountry trails (NPS, USFS, State Govt., or private outfitting operation) under a leader or some supervision. I have handled and cared for horses and mules and have the experience of safe and proper use of basic materials and equipment of the packing/trails trade with some assistance. I have prepared, loaded, and packed basic cargo over backcountry trails.

D. I have experience working and caring for stock animals.

Although no specific amount of experience, education, or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the positions.  The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X-118C for the WG-5001 series is used as a basis for qualifications.  Applicants must possess the knowledges, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position.  They are also listed below. You must possess skills and/or abilities in the following areas and will be evaluated accordingly:

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether the experience was gained as a part-time or full-time occupation.  Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position they have held.  Work experience must contain dates and hours worked per week.

To be eligible for this position, you must possess the education, training, and/or experience as described in questions 1 and 2 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire.

A tentative selectee must undergo a background investigation and favorable results must be received by Glacier National Park prior to a final job offer and establishment of an entrance-on-duty date.













This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties.  A valid, state-issued driver’s license is required.




 




If you are tentatively selected, and as a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record.  You must also submit,  at your own expense, (within a state-sealed envelope or submitted directly by the state authorities), certified driving records from all states disclosing all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.  Your employment, after your tentative selection, will be contingent upon receipt of these documents in a timely manner and that those documents establish, to the satisfaction of the selecting official, that you possess a valid driver’s license. 1. Federal employees, depending on the type of appointment, may earn annual (vacation) leave (from 4 to 8 hours) for every 80 hours worked according to the number of years (civilian plus creditable military) they have in the Federal service. Sick leave is earned at a rate of 4 hours for every 80 hours worked regardless of length of service.




2. Employees are paid every two weeks. Depending on tour of duty, an employee may be paid Sunday pay, holiday pay and shift differential or hazard pay. All Federal employees are required by PL 104-134 to have Federal payments made by direct deposit.
