About the Position: Prepares patients for and administers medications or immunizations and monitors them afterwards for signs of complication or reaction; administers CPR and other resuscitative measures as needed. Draws blood; collects and prepares specimens such as routine urine, stool, sputum and cultures for laboratory analysis. Assists physicians during diagnostic, therapeutic and/or minor surgical procedures by preparing necessary supplies and equipment; drapes, positions, holds the patient and hands instruments and supplies to the physician during the procedure. Prepares patients for tests, examinations, treatment, or minor surgery, assists patients as needed and provides for comfort and safety; regulates patient flow, and directs/moves patients to x-ray rooms or to other treatment locations in the MTF.

Major Duties
Serves as a practical nurse in one of several areas of a medical Treatment Facility, such as a hospital clinic or ward, operating room, emergency room, outpatient clinic, occupational health clinic, or a similar location. Responsible for a variety of treatment Procedures and the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages who are scheduled for treatment of illness, minor surgical Procedures, preventive health care, and/or pre and post operative care. Prepares and administers prescribed medications by oral, topical, intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular routes; administers prescribed oxygen and respiratory therapy treatments. Initiates IV's; regulates flow rate and monitors prescribed IV fluids; administers prescribed oxygen and respiratory therapy treatments.

General Schedule Basic Requirements:A. Successful completion of a program in practical nursing in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing.
B. Must be currently licensed to practice as practical or vocational nurse in a State or territory of the United States of the District of Columbia.
Experience: In addition to satisfying the basic requirements above, applicants must possess one year qualifying experience equivalent at the GS-4 level.
