The position entails extensive interaction with the Investigational Drug Branch (IDB) of CTEP, intramural and extramural clinical investigators (including those of the Children’s Oncology Group and other pediatric research networks), and other NCI Divisions.   The position additionally requires working with the multiple other stakeholders associated with childhood cancer research, including patient advocates, FDA, and pharmaceutical sponsors. Opportunities for continued patient care, teaching, and direct participation in clinical research are available.  Advises the Chief, CIB, Associate Director, CTEP, and Director, DCTD on national directions, scientific priorities and policies for the conduct of clinical trials in populations of children with malignancies. Evaluates research areas (e.g., treatment of specific tumor types, preclinical discoveries, new agent development) according to the progress being made in each and its overall contribution to the field, and consequently readjusts priorities for clinical research supported by DCTD, NCI. Establishes national goals for clinical research in pediatric oncology, in consultation with leading extramural and intramural investigators, consistent with the incumbent's evaluation of the overall research program in this area. Organizes and conducts strategy meetings relevant to individual problem areas in pediatric oncology in order to develop national consensus on research priorities. Disseminates information regarding promising new developments. Authors articles which address treatment strategies or summarize the clinical experience in individual pediatric malignancies intended for publication in peer-reviewed medical literature. Presents findings and NCI plans at scientific meetings. Performs scientific review of concepts for large comparative clinical trials in childhood cancer, and of protocol documents prior to final approval and implementation.
