GS-5 Level
Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience; or substitutable education completed at an accredited college or university as specified below; or an equivalent combination of the two, as specified below, by the closing date of the announcement in order to be considered.
Applicants must possess one year of progressively responsible specialized experience (as described below) that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be qualifying, it must have been comparable in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position. (To qualify for GS-5, the specialized experience must have been comparable in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-4 level.)
Specialized Experience: Experience that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Examples of specialized experience could include park guide or tour leader; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; or other similar work.
Substitution of Education for the Specialized Experience Required for GS-5: Successful completion of four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major study in a field that is directly related to the occupation, such as in American history, science, and/or public speaking, or that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in such subjects.
Combination of education and experience for GS-5: In combining education with specialized experience for the GS-5 requirements, only education beyond the second year of college study (i.e., that completed beyond the first 60 semester hours) counts towards the specialized experience required. For this substitution at GS-5, one academic year (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) of junior/senior level undergraduate education which includes a percentage of directly-related coursework as specified above is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. EXAMPLE: 6 months of specialized experience as described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework, such as in American history, science, or public speaking (50% of the related coursework required). This totals 100% of the requirements and meets the qualification requirements for GS-5 grade level.
