Naval Weapons Station

Depending on staffing needs a second cut-off date of 7 APR 2008 may be used.


Additional Requirements:  Work involves moderate risk and discomfort while outdoors without shelter or operating vehicles for extended periods of time over rough terrain.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a Confidential Security Clearance.  Required to be placed in a drug testing program.  Must be proficient in the use of two way radios and the Police Radio-Codes.  Must be proficient in the use of side arms and shotguns and must pass a weapons qualification exam twice a year.  Probationary period/Trial period may be required.   



Major Duties

The incumbent is responsible for protecting military installations and enforcing a wide variety of Naval regulations and instructions as it relates to Police Officer or gate sentry duties and the Punitive Article of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, as well as appropriate local ordinances and regulations. Patrols by vehicle or on foot. Responds to calls/alarms requiring pursuit and/or apprehension of offenders, civilian or military, involved in crimes ranging from minor infractions to serious felonies. Controlling access by ensuring vehicles and personnel accessing military installations/buildings have the appropriate credentials for entry. Responsible for controlling highly sensitive, restricted areas and waterfront perimeters. Controls access to special military aircraft, classified material, and conventional weapons storage. Performs land and water search and apprehension operations; canine and crowd control operations; and detains violators and subdues violent patients in hospitals.

Applicant must meet the following qualification requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: One year specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position.



Specialized Experience is experience that provided knowledge of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the education requirements.  For foreign education to be credited, you must provide the following in the "Other Information" section of your resume:  (a) name of the accredited U.S. institution that evaluated the education and date it was evaluated; and, (b) the degree / major / number of semester or quarter hours (list all that apply) to which the education was determined equivalent.  Education obtained from a foreign school for which the above information is not provided will NOT be credited.

Applicants substituting education for experience must include in their resume the college/university attended, type and year of degree received, the major field of study, and the total number of quarter/semester hours earned. Do not submit transcripts. At the time of the job offer, all selectees must produce, when requested, a copy of the transcript(s) to verify the education included in the resume.

In accordance with Executive Order 12564, applicants selected are required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is a drug-testing designated position (TDP) subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

Selectee must obtain and maintain a current state driver’s license.

Selectee will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period, obtain a security clearance, and meet all certification requirements (depending on the position to be filled) prior to appointment. Some positions may require successful completion of a physical examination, agility test, pre-employment drug test, and/or participation in the Anthrax vaccine immunization program if applying for an emergency essential position. Selectees required to meet one or more of these employment conditions before appointment will receive a tentative offer of employment.

A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to report to any of the scheduled appointments, fails the medical/agility/drug test, lacks the certification requirements, or is unable to obtain a security clearance. Incumbents of drug testing designated positions will be subject to random testing. Drug test results will be provided to the employing activity/command.

This position requires access to firearms or ammunition. The Federal government is prohibited from employing individuals in such position who have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, or a felony crime of domestic violence adjudged on or after 27 November 2002. Selectee for such position must submit a completed DD Form 2760, Qualification to Possess Firearms or Ammunition, before a final job offer can be made.

Work requires considerable strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during search or pursuit activities, or defending oneself or others against physical attack.

May be required to use protective clothing or gear.

Must be proficient in and maintain proficiency in the use of “Deadly Force” and pass a semi- annual written exam.
