About the Position: Knowledge of high risk delivery situations and the ability to appropriately intervene and obtain assistance. Practical knowledge of and skill sufficient to understand nursing principles, practices and procedures; conditions commonly encountered in day-to-day practice and problems that occur less frequently; normal conditions as well as common problems and unusual complications essential to the delivery of safe, comprehensive and holistic nursing care to women, fetuses, newborns, and families; patient care plans, maternal-child health equipment; and medical materials and supplies to carry out nursing care to the antepartum, delivering, postpartum mother and newborn infant.



Perform other duties as assigned.



Shift work is required. (0700-1900; 1900-0730; 0700-1530; 1500-2330; 2300-0700; Rotating Shift, weekends, and holidays)



LPN License and BLS Certificate required.

Pre-appointment physical and drug testing required.

Major Duties

Serves as Practical Nurse in the special care area of Labor and Delivery, accomplishing a wide range of complex nursing tasks. Responsible for the provision of diagnostic and treatment procedures to antepartum, delivering and postpartum patients. Participates in the initial assessment and treatment of the newborn as required by the specific assignment. Observes patient's changing conditions and participates in updating patient care plans throughout the course consistent with recognized nursing standards and in accordance with appropriate nursing care and prescribed medical treatment. Observes and documents all pertinent data regarding the physical and emotional status of patients. Provides instructions to the patient and significant other on preoperative and post-operative procedures when patient is going to have a cesarean section.

General Schedule Basic Requirements:A. Successful completion of a program in practical nursing in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing.

B. Must be currently licensed to practice as practical or vocational nurse in a State or territory of the United States of the District of Columbia. Must maintain a license as a practical nurse as a condition of employment.

Experience: In addition to satisfying the basic requirements above, applicants must possess one year experience equivalent to the GS 5 level.
