A full-time vacancy exists for a Physician Assistant/Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. This position is located within the Surgical Specialty Service Line at the University Drive Division of VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Incumbent duties are performed primarily in Plastic Surgery. The incumbent is responsible for providing health care to individuals, a comprehensive assessment, ordering, conducting and interpreting tests. Assess and manage common acute and chronic illnesses. The incumbent is also responsible for improving access to care for patients with chronic wound conditions and those requiring enterostomal therapy services, providing contingency and collaborative coverage of enterostomal therapy/wound management service. Consult and make referrals to physicians and other health care members of the health care team as appropriate.
Major Duties
Obtain medical histories and perform physical examinations.
Diagnose and treat acute health problems such as infections and injuries.
Diagnose, treat and monitor chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Order, perform and interpret diagnostic studies such as lab work and x-rays.
Facilitate care throughout the perioperative period including but not limited to:
Referral for pre-operative medical evaluation
Coordination of scheduling surgery
Ensuring appropriate follow-up
Prescribe medications and other treatments.
Provide health maintenance care for adults.
Promote positive health behaviors and self-care skills through education and counseling.
Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals as needed.
Provide individualized care, focusing not only on health problems, but also on the effects health problems have on people and their families.
Explain the details of health problems, medications and other topics to help people fully understand how to take care of themselves.
Ask about people's worries and concerns about their health and their health care.
Emphasize wellness and self-care by giving people the information they need to make healthy lifestyle choices and health care decisions.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS - Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner:
a. Master’s Degree in nursing from an accredited NLN program.
b. American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) CRNP Certification.
c. Minimum of three years of surgical or advanced practice nursing experience.
QUALIFICATIONS – Physician Assistant:
a. A bachelor’s degree from a PA training program, which is certified by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA); or
b. Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration, which is certified by the CAHEA and a bachelor’s degree in a health care occupation or a health related science; or
c. Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration, which is certified by the CAHEA, and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years. In addition, Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment within the VA. This requirement does not apply to non-certified Physician Assistants on the VA rolls as of March 12, 1993.
Physical Standards – PAs/CRNPs must be physically and mentally capable of satisfactorily performing the duties of this assignment.
English Language Proficiency – PAs/CRNPs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Those individuals newly appointed to a VAPHS PA/CRNP position will need to be credentialed prior to assuming the position.
You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.
You must submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test before you can be appointed into this position.
You must have a certification, licensure, or registration credentials in nurse/nurse practitioner/physician assistant for this position.
