Major Duties
As a developmental civil engineer you will work as a soil mechanics specialist. Incumbent investigates soils for development of design and reports for incorporation into specifications and design memoranda. Designs are for civil engineering works such as levees, embankments, roads, etc. Reviews and studies logs of borings to determine type of soil and conditions encountered during explorations; develops design data, confers with coworkers and participates in discussions, prepares reports on dike disposal structures, levees dams, excavations, pavements, etc. Drafts specifications for all or certain portions of earthwork, concrete and foundation engineering projects. During construction makes field visits to investigate on-site conditions. Provides assistance in negotiating A-E drilling contracts. Makes government cost estimates for drilling, sampling and testing of materials for negotiation with A-E cost proposals.

General Schedule SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
To qualify for the GS-07 level you must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level. Specialized experience is defined as:
Experience applying basic formulas to routine civil engineer calculations; preparing graphs, curves and table for other engineers. 2) Experience recording factual data in tests and observation studies 3) Experience searching technical reports to obtain information. 4) Experience assisting in surveying work by operations surveying instruments, staking out locations, plotting alignments and grades or other experience that is in or related to the position being filled. To qualify for the GS-09 level you must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Experience developing detailed construction, contract drawing or specification designs covering sitting, size and layout of structures. 2) Experience determining the placement and treatment of earth and rock materials in foundations, paving or structures. 3) Experience calculating and designing the materials used, shapes and dimensions of structures for holding, transporting, treating and controlling water. To qualify for the GS-11 level you must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Experience in developing desing data, determinging type of soil and conditions encountered during explorations. 2) Experience in preparing reports on dike disposal structures, levees dams, excavations, pavements and structural foundations. 3) Experience in participating in elaborate and detailed geotechnical field testing programs such as well pumping tests, load bearing test, insitu vane shear tests, pile load testing, soil and rock anchor stress testing, etc.
