Major Duties

This vacancy exists within the PCS/Surgical Services (Ophthalmology) at the VA Medical Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Major duties and responsibilities include:

Patient work-ups for both new patients and follow-up exams;
Performing various tests to include Visual fields examinations, Color Vision testing, and Refraction tests;
Assisting the physician in carrying out a variety of medical procedures and surgical treatments;
Photography;
Clinic scheduling;
Maintenance of all minor surgical instruments and supplies;
Ordering and stocking clinic medications; and
Performing other related duties, as assigned.
TOUR OF DUTY:  Monday through Friday, 8am - 4:30 pm.

TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION, you must have one full year1 of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level which required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of a health technician in ophthalmology.  Graduate education2 or an internship meets the specialized experience requirement only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.  One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for the GS-7.




1A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.  Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.  Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.




2A transcript or course listing must be submitted if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.  See Step 4 under "How to Apply" for a description of a course listing.  Applications submitted without this information will not be considered. 




3To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level.  Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.  Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. 






Example:  the position to be filled is an Editorial Assistant, GS-5.  The applicant has 9 months of specialized experience and 75 semester hours of college (15 semester hours beyond the second year and the equivalent of 3 months of specialized experience.  The applicant meets 75 percent of the required experience and 25 percent of the required education.  The applicant meets 100% of the requirement for one year of specialized experience and is qualified for the position.
