What is the position?


Legal Assistant's provide a full range of clerical and technical support for Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) and other technical/professional positions in the hearing office in processing cases filed under Titles II, XVI and XVIII of the Social Security Act.


 


This position is located in the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review office in West Des Moines, IA.

Major Duties

Legal Assistants provide the full range of clerical and technical support for Administrative Law Judges (ALJ) and other technical/professional positions in the hearing office in processing cases filed under Titles II, XVI and XVIII of the Social Security act. They review and analyze a wide variety of medical and legal documentation, records and evidence to ensure that case files are received and developed in accordance with legal and regulatory authorities. They perform a wide range of actions in support of pre-and post hearing case development, including composing correspondence to request medical reports from physicians, hospitals, claimants, representatives, etc., and to prepare responses to written inquiries on cases. Legal assistants schedule cases for hearing in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements and coordinate time and date of hearing with claimants, representatives, expert witnesses, and hearing reporters. They prepare Notices of Hearing, and contractor invoices for payment of vocational experts and medical experts.After the hearing, they reopen records to admit exhibits or close the record if no additional evidence was received. They respond to a wide range of inquiries from public, legal and judicial officials, and Federal, State and local officials relating to the legal processing of the hearings and appeals program. They type draft material from tape recordings or handwritten drafts, and prepare in final form and in correct format after review.

For GS-4:
A. Knowledge of office automation systems and the ability to type 40 words per minute to perform word processing duties AND one year of experience that included such duties as scheduling appointments; answering telephone; proofreading documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.; preparing drafts; and using word processing equipment.
OR
B. Knowledge of office automation systems and the ability to type 40 words per minute to perform word processing duties AND completion of two years of education above the high school level in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, college or university. One year of academic study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school.




For GS-5:
A. Knowledge of office automation systems and the ability to type 40 words per minute to perform word processing duties AND one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level that included (1) responsible clerical, technical, administrative or investigative experience that involved applying a body of rules, regulations, precedents and procedures, and/or (2) knowledge of legal documents and legal or judicial processes.
OR
B. Knowledge of office automation systems and the ability to type 40 words per minute to perform word processing duties AND four (4) full years of college leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree or a combination of both education and experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. A Bachelor's Degree is fully qualifying for GS-5.




For GS-6:
A. Knowledge of office automation systems and the ability to type 40 words per minute to perform word processing duties AND one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level that included (1) responsible clerical, technical, administrative or investigative experience that involved applying a body of rules, regulations, precedents and procedures, and (2) knowledge of legal documents and legal or judicial processes.
OR
B. Knowledge of office automation systems and the ability to type 40 words per minute to perform word processing duties AND one half an academic year of graduate education in a field that is directly related to the position (i.e. Law and Legal Studies). One year of full time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school you attended has determined to represent one year of study. If this information cannot be obtained from your school, we will consider 18 semester/27 quarter hours to be equal to one year of full-time study.




Part-time work is prorated in crediting experience (e.g., if you work 20 hours per week for a 12-month period), you will be credited with 6 months of experience.




COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Experience and education as described above may be combined to meet the minimum qualification requirements. Experience and education should be computed as percentages of the overall requirements and must equal to 100 percent when combined.
