These positions are responsible for assisting in the day-to-day maintenance of the facilities at Hole-in-the-Wall, Mid Hills, and the housing compound in Baker, CA.   

Baker is a small Mojave Desert community (pop.600) located on Interstate 15, the main Southern California route to Las Vegas, 60 miles west of Barstow, CA (pop. 32,000) and 90 miles west of Las Vegas, NV (pop. 1.2 million). There are limited facilities in Baker including available housing to rent or purchase. Shared government housing is available in Baker.  All major shopping or medical facilities are in Barstow, CA or Las Vegas, NV. Recreational activities such as hiking and biking are very accessible in the park (fall and spring are best times) and Lake Mead National Recreation Area (60 miles east) offers a wide variety of aquatic sports activity. In the desert climate, summer temperatures routinely rise above 100 degrees F daily. From October through May temperatures are less extreme. Winter highs are a cool 50 degrees F and night time lows seldom drop below 32 degrees F. Baker is frequently used as the staging area for the desert location of major motion pictures, television commercials, music videos and vehicle testing by automobile manufacturers.

Hole-in-the-Wall is located 26 miles north of Interstate 40 and Essex, CA. Government dorm-style housing is available at the Hole-in-the-Wall Interagency Fire Center. Grocery stores, other shopping and medical facilities are located in Needles, CA 60 miles east of the Center or Las Vegas, NV 90 miles to the northeast. The Fire Center is located at 4200 ft. in elevation and average summer high temperatures rarely exceed 100 degrees. Vegetation in the area ranges from desert scrub at lower elevations to pinyon-juniper forests above 5000 ft. with some areas of white fir above 7000 ft.

Major Duties

The incumbent of this position provides basic maintenance on quarters and facilities including maintaining evaporative coolers, assisting maintenance mechanics with painting, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. The incumbent will provide sanitation services such as emptying trash, cleaning toilets and picking up litter in the campgrounds. Operates a variety of vehicles up to 1 ton. Is responsible for using all safety methods, procedures and standards in the operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

VETERANS PREFERENCE:

A 10-point veterans preference is granted if you are a disabled veteran; you have received a Purple Heart; you are the spouse or mother of a 100% disabled veteran; or you are the widow, widower, or mother of a deceased veteran.  If claiming 10-point preference, you must submit, in addition to a DD-214, a Standard Form (SF) 15 and an official statement from the Veterans Administration or from a branch of the Armed Forces, certifying your service-connected disability. 

The Defense Authorization Act of November 18, 1997, grants preference to anyone who was released from the service under honorable conditions and served a minimum of two years on active duty, any part of which occurred during the Gulf War (from August 2, 1990, through January 2, 1992, regardless of where the person served or for how long (a Reservist must have served the full period for which called to active duty)).  The law also authorizes the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Bosnia during Operation Joint Endeavor (November 20, 1995 - December 20, 1996) and Operation Joint Guard (December 20, 1996 - to be determined).  The Secretary of each military department will decide which members are eligible.  The award of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal is qualifying for veterans' preference.  More information on veterans' preference is provided in OPM's VetGuide available on the Internet at http://www.opm.gov./)

4. Ability to drive safely. (Give your drivers license number and state. Describe your driving experience, driving record, listing any citations or tickets you may have received in the last 5 years, and any driver safety courses you have taken.)

Incumbent must operate a government vehicle.  A valid state driver's license is required.  Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.  You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists.  Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the state authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
