This position is located in the Alaska Region, Cold Bay Weather
Service Office in Cold Bay, Alaska. This position may be filled at
any of the grade levels listed with known promotion potential to the
GS-10 level.
This position is also being announced under NWS-AR-2008-0072 which
is open to status applicants nationwide (Current Federal status
employees serving under a career or career conditional appointment
in the competitive service, former Federal employees who served
under a career or career conditional appointment & have
reinstatement eligibility; CTAP/ICTAP eligibles, Veterans who are
preference eligibles or who have been separated from the armed
forces under honorable conditions after 3 or more years of
continuous service, 30% disabled veterans, handicapped and other

Major Duties
This position is located at a National Weather Service Office in the
Alaskan Region. The incumbent participates in the complete data
acquisition and public service programs at the station. The programs
can consist of: upper air, augmentation, editing and backup of the
Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), daily climatological
measurements, marine and/or hydrologic observations where
applicable, preparing and disseminating Short Term Forecasts and
Warnings. Prepares and conducts weather briefings to aviation,
marine and public users via the telephone, radio or in person.
Collects and disseminates marine weather observations from vessels
in Alaskan waters. Shift work is required. Most Alaska region WSOs
are in remote or isolated locations and have limited transportation
access and amenities.

Required Skills
Qualifications
Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to
the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.
Specialized experience includes measuring meteorological phenomena
with scientific equipment and instrumentation; Observing and
recording atmospheric characteristics, i.e., temperature, air
movement, visibility, pressure, air density, cloud types; Decoding,
plotting, and systematically recording data related to the physical
characteristics of the atmosphere, i.e., charts, diagrams, cross
sections; and Collecting, analyzing, interpreting, adjusting, and
verifying atmospheric and other meteorological data to confirm and
improve accuracy and efficacy.
Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience:
GS-05 level: Successful completion of a full 4-year course study
above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or
at least 24 semester hours in any combination of related coursework
in meteorology, mathematics, engineering, or physical science.
Graduate education may be substituted for the specialized experience
required for the GS-06, GS-07, GS-08 and GS-09 level only in those
instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
Coursework in any of the following combination of courses:
meteorology, mathematics, engineering, or physical science is
considered directly related.
GS-06 level: 9 semester hours (6months) of graduate education in
directly related coursework.
GS-07 level: 18 semester hours (1 year) of graduate education in
directly related coursework.
GS-08 level: 27 semester hours (1 1/2 years) of graduate education
in directly related coursework.
GS-09 level: 36 semester hours (2 years) or a master's degree in
directly related coursework.
GS-10 level: There is no substitution of education for experience.
