Duties include, but are not limited to the following.  Performs a wide variety of personal hygiene duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient (i.e., baths, oral hygiene, hair, nails, bladder and bowel care).  Daily care may include repetitious lifting, turning, positioning, range of motion and ambulation of patients.  Performs nasal pharyngeal suctioning. 

Veterans must provide a copy of final discharge papers (DD-214) that documents the type of discharge received.  If you are claiming 10-point veterans preference you must also complete a SF-15, Application for 10-Point Veterans Preference, furnishing the required documentation as stated on the back of the SF-15. Major Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to the following.  Performs a wide variety of personal hygiene duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient (i.e., baths, oral hygiene, hair, nails, bladder and bowel care).  Daily care may include repetitious lifting, turning, positioning, range of motion and ambulation of patients.  Performs nasal pharyngeal suctioning.  Shows initiative and skills in giving this kind of care with minimal direction form the professional nurse.  Identifies and reports data relative to more complex patient situations including subtle changes in patients’ behavior or condition, or variances related to neurological signs, vital signs, and other parameters in a timely manner.  Through the assigned duties, exhibits the ability to perform with minimal supervision by the professional nurse.  Assists physicians and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations by performing duties such as monitoring vital signs, preparing and positioning the patient, or by performing a variety of routine diagnostic tests and examinations.  The care provided frequently involves setting up of various types of complex medical equipment, e.g., respirators, surgical wound suction equipment, traction, hypothermia blankets, etc.  Safely uses assistive devices for lifting and repositioning patients.  Reports and documents observations of the condition of acute or chronic phase patients.  With minimal supervision, assists physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of the ill receiving medical, surgical, psychiatric, or outpatient treatment. The incumbent utilizes the computerized patient record system to document pertinent information; uses the electronic communication system to input and access information; verbally provides information to the nursing care team for inclusion into in care planning; completes designated portion of admission data base; participates in change of shift report, walking rounds and team conferences; maintains a daily assignment sheet.  Participates in performance improvement activities.  Teaches patients and family members the necessity of continued proper health care.  Performs other duties as assigned.  At the GS-3 & 4 levels, incumbent will receive on-the-job training and/or formal training to develop proficiency to progress to the full performance level of the position.

GS-3 -  Candidates must have 6 months of general experience  OR  1 year above high school with courses related to the occupation. 

GS-4 Candidates must have 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience   OR  2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation.

GS-5 Candidates must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level  OR  4 years above high school (Transcripts Required)

NOTE:  Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)


You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.
