Major Duties


The person in this position will work under the clinical direction of the Restorative Care Coordinator and is located within Patient Care Services at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for assisting in and teaching Veterans Restorative Nursing Care functions with the purpose of facilitating optimal functional independence of the Veteran within the HJ Heinz Progressive Care Center.
 
Major duties and responsibilities include:

Assisting in Veterans Restorative Nursing Care functions;
Observing, reporting and documenting pertinent patient information on the clinical record;
Promoting maximal Veteran motivation and independence;
Providing Veterans with a sense of self worth and dignity by fostering self-reliance;
Performing patient care tasks in the Patient Care Service Line when Restorative Care activities are completed;
Therapeutic Duties:

assisting and/or supervising in active or active assisted range of motion exercises,
performing range-of-motion activities,
assisting in splint or brace application and assessing/documenting skin integrity under the device,
performing bed mobility procedures including positioning, moving to either side, turning, moving to head and foot of bed,
performing supportive instruction in amputation and prosthesis care including application/removal of the prosthesis, caring for the prosthesis, assessing the amputation skin integrity,
assisting and/or supervising the patient with oral eating or swallowing of foods and fluid,
assisting and/or supervises the patient with personal hygiene, dressing and/or grooming,
performing supportive instruction, cueing assistant and/or supervision in bowel and bladder continence, and;
Performing other related duties, as assigned.
TOUR OF DUTY:  Rotating shifts to include weekends and holidays.
DUTY LOCATION: Although assigned a primary duty station, incumbent may be requested to perform duty assignments at any of the three facilities (University Drive, Highland Drive, HJ. Heinz) of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Qualifying for GS-5 with experience:  You must have one full year1 specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level.  This experience must be close to the work of this job and has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of Nursing Assistant.  Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as:






Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.


Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.


Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.


Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

Qualifying for GS-5 with education2:  Successful completion of a four year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of this position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.

Qualifying with a combination of education and experience for GS-5:  Equivalent combinations3 of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements (TRANSCRIPT OR COURSE LISTING REQUIRED)2

3To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level.  Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.  Only education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level is qualifying.  Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. 




Example:  the position to be filled is an Editorial Assistant, GS-5.  The applicant has 9 months of specialized experience and 75 semester hours of college (15 semester hours beyond the second year and the equivalent of 3 months of specialized experience.  The applicant meets 75 percent of the required experience and 25 percent of the required education.  The applicant meets 100% of the requirement for one year of specialized experience and is qualified for the position.
