Plans, coordinates and executes a comprehensive and complex occupational therapy program for inpatients and outpatients.  Works closely with the treatment team in providing comprehensive patient care.  Participates fully in PMRS meetings and education activities.  After receiving an appropriate referral, incumbent evaluates patients using standard and non-standard methods to determine range of motion, strength, sensation, proprioception, coordination, perception, cognition, ADL, work activities, orthotic and prosthetic needs and equipment needs. 



Major Duties

Develops and implements an occupational therapy treatment plan to meet rehabilitation objectives such as teaching adaptive or compensatory techniques for task accomplishment, providing patient and caregiver education, designing programs for therapeutic exercise, muscle re-education, neuromuscular facilitation, perceptual motor integration and fabrication and application of splints and devices for ADL.  Patients treated have complex physical, emotional and social problems.  Incumbent re-evaluates patient's performance with appropriate modifications to treatment as indicated.  Regularly presents patient information to physician regarding outcomes of treatment, current status and expectations.  Evaluates patient's living situation through home visits, patient and/or family interview or consultation with other health care professionals and assists patients in solving problems associated with that environment.  Carries a full patient caseload accepting new consults as referred by the physician.  Treatment directly affects a patient's independence, self-care, social and emotional well-being.  Assignments may include acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, medical, surgical or NHCU.  Incumbent may be assigned to a specialty clinic in addition to the clinical assignment. Considers age and developmental level, gender, education and functional status when providing OT services.  Is aware of signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect and reports to the appropriate authority.  May supervise students from professional occupational therapy and occupational           therapy assistant programs.  Orients other health care professionals to the OT program.  Provides in-service programs as appropriate.  Instructs patient and family members in the proper use of adaptive equipment and durable medical equipment and prepares timely prosthetics requests.  Documents evaluation, treatment, education and discharge in the computer health record following departmental guidelines.  Participates in multidisciplinary meetings including rounds, team meetings, family conferences and discharge planning.  Assists in the development of new treatment programs and techniques and refines existing programs.  Participates in CARF and JCAHO activities to ensure re-accreditation.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

     a.  Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States. 

     b.  Education.  Graduation from a baccalaureate degree program in occupational therapy or a post-baccalaureate certificate program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. 

     c.  Certification.  Applicants must have passed the Certification Examination for Occupational Therapists Registered OTR. 

    d.  English Language Proficiency.  Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

    e. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

Graduate education and graduate degrees may be substituted if they are from a college or university recognized by the AOTA, or in a field related to occupational therapy (e.g., anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, nursing, physical therapy, social work, geriatrics/gerontology, exercise physiology).  Graduate education or a graduate degree in a field related to occupational therapy must be from a college or university which was regionally accredited at the time the candidate completed the program.  To substitute graduate education or a graduate degree, it must have been completed after completing the degree or certificate required for appointment in paragraph b above. 

DEFINITION OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

Experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, i.e., providing occupational therapy services in a therapeutic setting.


DEFINITION OF 'WELL QUALIFIED' FOR CTAP/ICTAP

To be determined well qualified to receive special selection priority for this position, you must meet CTAP/ICTAP eligibility requirements, the specialized experience requirements, as well as, have comprehensive knowledge of the duties required in this position to evaluating patients using standard and non-standard methods to determine range of motion, strength, sensation, proprioception, coordination, perception, cognition, ADL, work activities, orthotic and prosthetic needs and equipment needs. 

QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE

One year of clinical experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.


You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.

Applicants must possess proficiency in written and spoken English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d) for positions involving direct patient care.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, or 16 with a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, as of the closing date of this vacancy announcement.
