This vacancy announcement will be used to fill 4 positions at this time, however, it may be used to fill additional similar vacancies.   These positions are located at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in San Francisco, California.   These are seasonal temporary positions, with work not to exceed 1039 hours in a service year.   Under this type of appointment, selectee(s) may be eligible for rehire in future seasons.

Major Duties


These positions are located in the Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.   The incumbents are responsible for a wide variety of interpretive and visitor service duties.   The incumbents develop interpretive programs and present them to a wide variety of audiences including international and national visitors as well as local audiences, youth, and family groups.   The incumbents plan and conduct maritime demonstration programs, research maritime historical topics, and educate and inform visitors about the significance of the park resources and about the laws/rules/regulations relating to the protection of these resources.   The incumbents offer first aid services and educate visitors about the potential hazards that may be encountered aboard historic vessels.
Position will be filled at the GS-4 level.   Employees in temporary appointments cannot receive promotions.

This position is located in San Francisco, California at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.  San Francisco offers panoramic views and cultural diversity as well as a wide selection of activities, restaurants, sightseeing, shopping, entertainment and recreation.  Located at the west end of Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park includes a fleet of national historic landmark vessels at Hyde Street Pier, a visitor center, and a library/research facility.  Visitors board turn-of-the-century ships, learn traditional arts like boatbuilding, woodworking and knot-tying, and learn more about the nation's maritime heritage.  San Francisco is a high cost of living area, with an abundance of rental properties ( www.craigslist.org) and public transportation ( http://transit.511.org/index.asp) available.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
PRE-EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:   Under the Requirements of the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), all new Federal employees, must pass a background investigation.   Appointment is subject to a preemployment finger print and credit check.   Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.   Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
A pre-employment National Agency Check (NAC) must be completed for anyone who does not already have this level of clearance prior to entry on duty.   An additional background security investigation (NACI) will be initiated for those who do not already have this level of clearance.   Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.   Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.  
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances up to six miles daily, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion is required.   Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.   Extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland fire fighting and other emergency response duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight.

What To Expect Next:

Once your complete application is received, we will verify your responses provided in the Assessment Questionnaire against your other supporting application materials you submitted, and your final score will be assigned.  Based on applicant scores, the most highly qualified candidates will be referred to the hiring manager for further consideration and possible interview.  We expect to make a selection within 60 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Applicants must possess six (6) months of general experience and six (6) months of specialized experience for a total of one year of experience as defined below; or two years of post high school education as specified below; or an equivalent combination of the two, by the closing date of the announcement in order to be considered.




EXPERIENCE:




General Experience is (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.




Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  For Park Guide positions, specialized experience is experience that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups.  Examples of specialized experience could include park guide or tour leader; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; or other similar work.




To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.   (Excess specialized experience can substitute for general experience; but excess general experience cannot be substituted for required specialized experience.)

EDUCATION:  




Substitution of education for the experience above:  For GS-4, two years of successfully completed education above the high school level for which high school graduation or the equivalent was a prerequisite, may be substituted for the required one year of experience (general and specialized).   This education must have included at least 12 semester hours of courses related to this position, such as in American History, science, and/or public speaking.




One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in a accredited college or university.




COMBINATION OF QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:




Combination of education and experience for GS-4:   An equivalent combination of the education and experience specified above is also qualifying.   For example, 6 months of general or specialized experience (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with one year of education as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), which included at least 6 semester hours of related courses such as American history, science or public speaking, for example (50% of the directly-related courses required) is fully qualifying for the GS-4 grade level for this position.
