Position is located in the Division of Visitor and Resources Protection, in the Rincon Mountain District (East) of Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona, a metropolitan area of over 900,000. All urban services are readily available within the area. Daytime temperatures range from 100+ degrees in the summer to 50 degrees in the winter. Cooler temperatures are expected at higher elevations. No government housing available.


 


You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS standards.


You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position. 


Incumbent must operate a government vehicle. A valid state driver's license is required and must be maintained.


The selectee of this position must be able to secure and maintain a Red-Card Fire Fighter Certification.


Incumbent is required to maintain a first responder certification.


You must submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test before you can be appointed into this position.


This is a TEMPORARY position/appointment not to exceed 1039 hours; may be shortened depending on agency needs.  Various including nights, weekends and holidays.  Overnight stays in the back-country up to ten nights.



Major Duties

 
 
The core duties of this position are a full range of Park Ranger generalist duties including back-country duties and front country patrol duties in the Rincon Mountain District of Saguaro National Park.  The Ranger spends time in the field doing strenuous hiking or horseback riding, contacting visitors, responding to all types of emergencies including fighting wildland fires. 
 
The ranger will be required to maintain a first responder certification and wildland fire fighting type 2.  The Ranger must be able to frequently backpack on overnight trips during inclement conditions, into the wilderness area of Saguaro National Park.  
 
Working Conditions:
 
Strenuous hiking, horseback riding, back-country duties, in all kinds of weather.  Individual may work on campground maintenance, along with trail maintenance while in the back-country. This is primary back-country position that requires staying in the back-country for extended periods of time. Serves as Manning Camp ranger managing the camp site with overnight stays at other campsites in the Rincon Mountain District.  Lives in backcountry during 10 day work period.

5-POINT PREFERENCE. A 5-point preference is granted to veterans who entered the military service prior to October 15, 1976, or who served in a military action for which they received a Campaign Badge or Expeditionary Medal, including the award of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Bosnia during Operation Joint Endeavor, November 20, 1995 - December 20, 1996, and Operation Joint Guard, December 20, 1996 - to be determined.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL: Prior to appointment, the person selected for this position must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician.




 




WILDLAND FIRE RED CARD: This position requires you possess or be able to successfully complete Wildland Fire training and be able to maintain a current certification.  Must be able to successfully complete S130/190 and maintain a wildland fire red card. Please provide a copy of your certification (wildland fire red card) if you currently possess one.
