The Orlando VA Medical Center (Station # 675) was officially established effective October 1, 2006, when it was approved as a distinct VA facility and separated from the previous integration with the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, FL. The Orlando VA system includes a 120-bed NHCU, a 60-bed Domiciliary, and the large comprehensive, satellite outpatient clinic and CBOC systems. The Orlando VA system is located in East-Central Florida and is recognized as a family-oriented area, with many local entertainment attractions/outdoor activities readily available. Florida is recognized for its warm, sunny climate, beautiful beaches, abundant housing options, and no state income tax. The Orlando VA is associated with the University of Central Florida and other local community colleges, with active affiliations in associated health programs, such as Nursing, Pharmacy, and Physical/Occupational Therapy.
Major Duties
The Patient Educator position is assigned to Education Service and will work in the Orlando VA Medical Center. The Patient Educator will develop and coordinate educational programs and materials specific for patients with complex and tertiary care needs, educate those who perform patient teaching, and will serve as the Chair of the Patient/Family Health Education Committee. The nurse in this position is responsible for implementing innovative educational strategies for developing and assessment of and maintaining staff competencies related to patient education and may be responsible for appropriate aspects of nursing orientation, annual needs assessment, nursing continuing education programs and other services to support nursing practice and improve nursing care delivery. In addition, the nurse will participate in activities related to nursing education and medical center programs.

Position Requirements:
1.) US Citizenship and English language proficiency;
2.) Graduate from a National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)-accredited program and current, unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN);
3.) BSN and MSN Degree from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited nursing program, or an BSN from an NLNAC/CCNE accredited program with a Master’s Degree in Education required.
National certification in Education or a clinical nursing role preferred; Clinical Nurse Specialist and/or Adult Nurse Practitioner training and experience preferred;
4.) Must possess a current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS);
5.) Minimum of 5 years of post academic relevant clinical experience with 3 years of most recent clinical experience or previous background in nursing, patient, or employee education preferred.
6.) Previous experience as an educator/instructor with responsibility and accountability for bedside clinical instruction, classroom training, and/or other education delivery methods for nurses and other health care personnel preferred;
7.) Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of adult learning principles and their incorporation into educational planning and practice as related to competency development.
8.) Demonstrated skill in problem-solving and in planning and implementing new programs to improve the overall delivery of patient care through the enhancement of patient education. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of JCAHO accreditation standards required.
9.) Demonstration of a high degree of personal and professional accountability, maturity, stability and the ability to be self-directed, function independently, and work effectively with others at all levels within the organization;
10.) Exceptional skills in all aspects of oral/written communications and computer applications.
11.) Must be willing to adjust their tour of duty as needed or as assigned (evenings/nights/weekends) to meet the educational needs of patients and families, and/or staff who teach patients in various venues within the medical center. This may include diverse education activities necessary to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and revise the education program for staff working alternate tours of duty.
