The National Science Foundation announces a nationwide search for a Program Director for the Graduate Teaching Fellowships in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program in the Division of Graduate Education. 

The Division of Graduate Education provides the Foundation’s focus for strong and innovative support for graduate students and graduate education programs to ensure the strength, diversity, and vitality of the US science and engineering workforce.  The Division aims to enhance the flexibility and appropriateness of graduate programs at various levels and across the full range of disciplines supported by the Foundation as a whole.   The Division seeks to expand its collaborations with other programs and units at NSF and sister agencies to more effectively facilitate advances in graduate education. The Graduate Teaching Fellowships in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program prepares its fellows to convey their cutting-edge research to K-12 students and teachers, thereby preparing graduate students with superior communications skills as well as providing a vertical integration of science teaching in the schools.  Through interactions with teachers and students in K-12 schools, graduate students serve as role models while enriching STEM instruction.



Major Duties

The GK-12 Program Director is responsible for the implementation, review, funding, post-award management, and evaluation of the program and contributes to the intellectual integration with other programs supported by the Division. Designs and implements the proposal review and evaluation process for relevant proposals. Coordinates the selection of well-qualified individuals to provide objective reviews on proposals either as individuals or as members of a panel. Conducts final review of proposals and evaluations, and recommends acceptance or declination. Manages and monitors on-going grants, contracts, interagency and cooperative agreements to ensure fulfillment of commitments to NSF. Evaluates progress of awards through review and evaluation of reports and publications submitted by awardees and/or meetings at NSF and during site visits. Contributes to the responsibility for establishing goals and objectives, initiating new program thrusts and phasing out old projects. Recommends new or revised policies and plans in scientific, fiscal, and administrative matters to improve the activities and management of the Program.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Education, plus six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or graduate education administration experience beyond the Ph.D. is required. 

This position will be filled on a one or two year Visiting Scientist Appointment, a Federal Temporary Appointment or an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment.  Federal Temporary and Visiting Scientist appointments will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act with a current salary range of $98,033 to $152,775 including locality pay for the Washington, D.C. area.  For a Visiting Scientist appointment, the individual is in a non-pay leave status from his/her home institution and is appointed to NSF’s payroll as a Federal employee.  NSF withholds Social Security and provides reimbursement to the home institution for fringe benefits.  For a Federal temporary appointment of more than one-year, the usual civil service benefits (retirement, health, and life insurance) are applicable.  For an IPA assignment, the individual remains on the payroll of his/her home institution and the institution continues to administer pay and benefits.  NSF will reimburse the institution for NSF’s negotiated share of the costs.  Individuals eligible for an IPA assignment include employees of State and local government agencies, institutions of higher education, Indian tribal governments, federally funded research and development centers and qualified nonprofit organizations.  For more information regarding a Visiting Scientist appointment or an IPA assignment, visit our website at http://www.nsf.gov//about/career_opps.

Under the provisions of the Intergovernmental Personnel Act, assignees remains on the payroll of his/her home institution and the home institution will continue to administer pay and benefits.  NSF reimburses the home institution for NSF’s negotiated share of the cost of the assignment.
