The National Science Foundation announces a nationwide search for a Program Director for the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program in the Division of Graduate Education.
The Division of Graduate Education provides the Foundation’s focus for strong and innovative support for graduate students and graduate education programs to ensure the strength, diversity, and vitality of the US science and engineering workforce. The Division aims to enhance the flexibility and appropriateness of graduate programs at various levels and across the full range of disciplines supported by the Foundation as a whole. The Division seeks to expand its collaborations with other programs and units at NSF and sister agencies to more effectively facilitate advances in graduate education. The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists, engineers, and educators with the interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills to become, in their own careers, leaders and creative agents for change. Since 1998, 195 IGERT projects have been funded; these involve over 4,000 graduate students and over 3,000 faculty at 96 lead universities.
We seek an IGERT Program Director with deep disciplinary knowledge, experience in interdisciplinary graduate programs along with a commitment to high standards and to working as part of creative teams, a considerable breadth of interest and receptivity to new ideas, a strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and a high degree of personal integrity.

Qualification requirements include a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Education plus six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or graduate education administration experience beyond the Ph.D. is required. Direct knowledge of and/or experience with the IGERT program or other doctoral reform initiatives is preferred.
This position will be filled on a one or two year Visiting Scientist Appointment, a Federal Temporary Appointment or an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment. Federal Temporary and Visiting Scientist appointments will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act with a current salary range of $98,033 to $152,775 including locality pay for the Washington, D.C. area. For a Visiting Scientist appointment, the individual is in a non-pay leave status from his/her home institution and is appointed to NSF’s payroll as a Federal employee. NSF withholds Social Security and provides reimbursement to the home institution for fringe benefits. For a Federal temporary appointment of more than one-year, the usual civil service benefits (retirement, health, and life insurance) are applicable. For an IPA assignment, the individual remains on the payroll of his/her home institution and the institution continues to administer pay and benefits. NSF will reimburse the institution for NSF’s negotiated share of the costs. Individuals eligible for an IPA assignment include employees of State and local government agencies, institutions of higher education, Indian tribal governments, federally funded research and development centers and qualified nonprofit organizations.
