The National Parks of New York Harbor include Gateway National Recreation Area, Governors Island and the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island.  In addition, there are six cultural and historic destinations in Manhattan, including the African Burial Ground, and one in Westchester County.  The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, an affiliated site, is also a part of this network.

Serves as the principal assistant to the Commissioner, National Parks of New York Harbor (NPNH) providing day to day administrative support.

Major Duties

Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor of the office, makes independent decisions about and manages the appropriateness of background noise or discussions. Keeps all printers, faxes and other support equipment loaded and serviceable and maintains NPNH's administrative files by filing all documents using the NARA-approved filing system. Receives and determines the nature of all telephone calls and business of visitors to the Commissioner and other staff in the office. Maintains a log  of callers and assists the Commissioner in tracking those requiring a response. Controls the Commissioner's activities schedule and reminds the superior of appointments as needed to assure that commitments are met and arranges meetings. Schedules are maintained in an electronic format and updated in real time Serves as official timekeeper for the Commissioner's direct reports and performs miscellaneous administrative tasks as required such as managing and ordering support supplies and materials for the office, preparation of requisitions, conducting property inventories and making minor edits to OFS and PMIS requests. Serves as a liaison between the Commissioner and the staff necessary to implement the Commissioner's policies and directives. Reviews correspondence and documents prepared for signature. Opens all mail to the Commissioner, screens it for time sensitivity and relationship to current issues.  Arranges for travel by the Commissioner and other NPNH Office staff, arranges schedule of visits, secures travel and hotel reservations and prepares travel vouchers and reports from travel diaries.  Assembles background material for agenda items and informs participants for topics to be discussed.  Coordinates tours of NPNH for visiting dignitaries, partners, new employees and others as required.

Qualifications

For the GS-7 grade level:  applicant must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level.

For the GS-8 grade level:  applicant must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level.

For the GS-9 grade level:  applicant must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-8 level.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be credible, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. 

Promotion Potential: If this position is filled at either the GS-07 or GS-08 level, the incumbent may be non-competitively promoted without further competition when the supervisor determines that the duties of the higher grade level are being performed and all regulatory requirements have been met.


You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
