Duties include but are not limited to: The incumbent uses a wide range of knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range theories, principles, and methodologies in the practice of audiology to a wide range of populations. Provides hearing aid evaluation, assessment, selection, fitting, orientation, training, and follow-up services. Evaluates functional status before and after intervention and verifies acoustic performance of hearing aids using electroacoustic, real-ear, and functional measurements. Performs compensation and pension examinations including detailed past, family, social, military, and occupational history, comprehensive evaluation of type and severity of hearing loss, tinnitus evaluation, special auditory tests, and opinions on the relationship between conditions and military service when requested. Plans, coordinates, and implements a full range of patient-focused treatment services designed to optimize function. Documents in the medical record: evaluates, diagnosis and clinical opinion, treatment plans, outcomes of treatment, changes in functional status, and patient/family education. Assists and/or provides orientation/training of new staff. Provides patient and family education including informed consent. Follows applicable informed consent, HIPAA rules on privacy and protecting patient rights. The incumbent will be responsible for vestibular and electrophysiologic assessment. Experience in ENG (Electronystagmography), VNG (Videonystagmography), and ABR (Audiology Brainstem Response) is preferred.

All individual applying under this announcement must meet the qualifications for appointment as contained in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G29, Audiologist Qualification Standard. This standard is available in the Human Resources Liaison Office for review. Candidates who meet the appropriate requirements contained in the standard will be considered.
(1) Creditable Experience
(a) Knowledge of Contemporary Professional Audiology Practice. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with contemporary professional audiology practice. This knowledge may be evidenced by one or more of the following:
1. At least 1 year of active professional practice or its equivalent. Active professional practice means paid or non-paid employment as a professional audiologist engaged in the practice of audiology as defined by the appropriate licensing board.
2. Academic course work leading to a doctoral degree in audiology or hearing science.
(b) Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it is both of the following:
1. Work as a professional audiologist directly related to the position to be filled; and
2. At a level comparable to audiology experience at the next lower grade level.
GS-9:
Education: Master’s degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. “Accredited” means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation organization and an audiology program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Licensure. For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. A staff audiologist who fails to obtain licensure within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard will be terminated.
GS-11:
(a) Education and Experience. Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the next lower level; or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a directly related field. For positions involved in research audiologist assignments involving no direct patient care, no additional education or professional experience is required beyond those identified at the GS-9 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
(1) Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice;
(2) Ability to communicate orally and in writing;
(3) Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, communication, psychoacoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology;
(4) Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders;
(5) Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice; and
(6) Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care professionals.
GS-12:
Licensure. For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. A staff audiologist who fails to obtain licensure within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard will be terminated.

In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. For positions involved in research audiology assignments involving no direct patient care, completion of a doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a related field is fully qualifying. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Assignments: Staff Audiologist. Staff audiologists at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of audiology to a wide range of populations. Individuals may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
(1) Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies;
(2) Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently;
(3) Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions;
(4) Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals;
(5) Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice; and
(6) Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice.
