Major Duties

This position is located in the Food Production and Service Section of the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA.  The person in this position will serve as a cook in a 452 bed active, affiliated Medical Cente with a 240 bed Nursing Home Care Unit with a variety of diets. 
Major duties and responsibilities include:

Preparing and cooking a variety of menu items for both regular and modified special diets;
Working with higher graded cook to roast, fry and stew meats, fish and poultry; slicing meats, preparing soups, broths and gravies;
Preparing canned and frozen vegetables for service;
Assisting in the preparation of the entire meal requiring timing and coordination of steps so all food is ready for serving at meal time;
Organizing and assembling foods to be transported from main kitchen to the Nursing Home Care Unit;
Operating, maintaining and cleaning all types of cooking equipment utilizing gas, electricity and steam;
Handling food according to established sanitation regulations and food handling techniques;
Assisting with adjusting recipes according to fluctuating patient census;
Transporting food and supplies to Nursing Home in 1 1/2 ton enclosed truck from main kitchen; and
Performing other related duties as assigned.

To qualify for this position:  A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.  Evidence of specialized experience, which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position, must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume or OF-612. Additionally, you must possess a current, valid drivers license from Pennsylvania or the state in which you reside.




SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:  Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.  Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.  The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.  The screen-out element(s) for the position of cook are "The ability to perform the work of a cook without more than normal supervision" and "I have a current, valid drivers license from either Pennsylvania or the state in which I reside."




Physical effort and work conditions: 




Work requires light to moderate physical effort while standing, stooping, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, and reaching.  Frequently assigned to move objects of light to moderate weight (45 pounds) unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavy objects with the assistance of co-workers and/or lifting devices.  Regularly required to push heavy tray delivery carts.  Regularly assigned to perform cleaning requiring physical effort to assemble and use cleaning equipment.




The work performed in the main kitchen area is at time uncomfortably warm, in high humidity, and noisy.  The incumbent is commonly exposed to hazardous situations such as minor cuts, bruises, burns and scalds, slipping/falling, electrical equipment and/or hot foods, sharp instruments and equipment, extreme temperature of kitchen, dish room, freezers, and coolers, and steam from cooking/washing equipment.
