NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann
Arbor Michigan seeks an enthusiastic scientist with experience in
fisheries research to pursue basic and applied research towards
understanding the impact of environmental stressor (climate change,
hypoxia, invasive species, pollution, harvest) on the regulation of
fish populations, to apply this ecological understanding to fishery
management and conservation problems, and to develop models to
predict fish spatial distribution, recruitment, productivity, and
sustainability. The research will be directed toward improving our
understanding of ecosystem level processes in controlling fish
communities and populations in the Great Lakes. The incumbent will
be expected to develop predictive models to address fisheries
concerns in the Great Lakes, to collaborate with other scientists at
GLERL and outside GLERL (e.g., other federal laboratories,
universities, private industry), and to build active research
programs emphasizing collaborative and inter-disciplinary
approaches. Background of the incumbent may be in fish
biology/ecology, aquatic ecology, limnology, or the marine
sciences. The individual will be expected to present results in
peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations and to
submit research proposals to supplement their research programs.

Major Duties

The incumbent will actively participate in the planning, scientific
program development, and leadership of research programs that
address Great Lakes and coastal science issues. The incumbent is a
research fisheries biologist and performs research on critical
problems associated with fisheries resource management and ecology.
The research is performed independently, as a member of a research
team, or head of a research team of scientists. The Incumbent writes
scientific papers for publication, investigates long range and short
term problems, writes proposals to fund research, and recommends
solutions for conservation, habitat preservation, and protection of
the fisheries resource.

they have a degree with major study in biology, zoology, or


biological oceanography that included at least 30 semester hours in


biological and aquatic science and 15 semester hours in the physical


and mathematical sciences. This course work must have included:


At least 15 semester hours of preparatory training in zoology beyond


introductory biology or zoology in such courses as invertebrate


zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology,


advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, and


parasitological; and at least 6 semester hours of training applicable


to fishery biology in such subjects as fishery biology, ichthyology,


limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or fresh


water ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population


dynamics, or related course work in the field of fishery biology;


and at least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two


or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, or


statistics.
In addition to the education requirements the applicants must posses


one year of progressively responsible specialized experience that


equipped the applicant with the particular rating factors


(knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies) to successfully


perform the duties of the position, and is typically in or related


to the work of the position to be filled. To be qualifying, it must


have been comparable in level of difficulty and responsibility to


that of at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of


progression for the position. (For GS-13, you must possess one year


of specialized experience comparable to the GS-12 level of


difficulty.)




Specialized experiences includes experience in the development of


models to improve the forecasting of fisheries productivity,


recruitment, and sustainability. As a part of the research, the


incumbent pursues field and experimental studies, has performed


research on critical problems associated with fisheries resource


management and ecology. The ability to write scientific papers and


proposals to fund research and recommend solutions.




TIME-IN-GRADE RESTRICTION: Time-in-grade requirements


must be met by the closing date of this announcement. This requires


applicants to have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in


the normal line of progression for this occupation.
