The Nurse Manager is accountable for managing nursing practice and care delivery system for a new 10 bed inpatient Metabolic unit and a multi-istitute Medical-Surgical Day Hospital attending to over 6,400 patient visits per year in the Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center (CRC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Major Duties

The Inpatient Metabolic Program/ Day Hospital Nurse Manager will be expected to: provide vision and leadership to the patient care staff of a PCU, working in partnership with Institute colleagues to advance the clinical research programs of the NIH; be held accountable for directing unit operations, staffing and budget for a program representing a major research area defined by clinical specialty and research focus, and may include services provided in an Inpatient PCU in the CRC, Day Hospital and/or ambulatory Care Clinics; design and manage a nursing care delivery model to assure both clinical expertise and protocol knowledge; monitor and manage clinical quality, customer service effectiveness and operational efficiency of the unit to assure research support requirements and patient care needs are met; collaborate with Institute and administrative colleagues to create and maintain an
effective system for PCU-based decision-making and communications (PCU Governance); create recruitment, competency assessment, and educational strategy for unit. Serves as the accountable supervisor for all hiring / personnel actions; create unit-based roles (e.g. unit based education coordinator, core team leader for cross coverage, etc) as needed to support the varied programs on the unit. Manages PCU annual operating budget for personnel, supplies and small equipment.
Provides justification for variances in expected performance; represent NIH and Nursing and Patient Care Services at community and professional organization events.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

REGISTRATION: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States.

Applicants must submit a copy of their current license and/or registration.

Selective Factors:





Minimum of 3-5 years of management experience

Experience in change management, creative leadership, and program development

Knowledge of clinical research is desired

OCN certification preferred

Masters Degree preferred

Previous experience in managing inpatient and ambulatory care settings preferred

Previous experience in Obesity, Bariatrics and /or Endocrine disorders preferredTo qualify based on education, submit copy of transcript or list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
