Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institutes
of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory
of Host Defenses (LHD).

Major Duties
Provides administrative and other support to the Laboratory Chief,
Laboratory of Host Defenses (LHD) by collecting and compiling data
for the resolution of operational problems and by coordinating the
preparation of documents for the accomplishment of Lab business.
Also, assists other senior level staff within the Laboratory in
performing a variety of tasks and assignments associated with
carrying out the mission of the LHD. As needed, provides assistance
to the Laboratory Operations Specialist, within the lab.
Assistance provided requires a substantive knowledge of the
organization. Tasks include:
Researching, collecting, coordinating and organizing or analyzing
data and/or other information for special projects or studies for
use in briefings, speeches, lectures, meetings or other
presentations for the Chief, LHD.
Preparing or participating in the preparation of special
presentations using PowerPoint, Excel, or other appropriate
software.
Responding to telephonic and written inquiries from the general
public, staff or other Institutes and the OD, NIH, members of
advisory groups, representatives of the biomedical research
professional organizations, etc.
Coordinating or performing special projects or other assignments.
Researching regulations and policies and/or interfacing with other
offices, as required, to facilitate problem resolution.
Preparing or drafting agendas for staff or other internal meetings
and gathering and organizing materials.
Providing support and assistance in the planning and organization of
scientific meetings.
Attending meetings with supervisor, taking notes, developing and
following-up on action items.
Setting up electronic databases for tracking and monitoring.
Perform specialized searches for the supervisor.
Participating in the development of office or operational procedures.

Required Skills
Qualifications
GS-8: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next
lower grade level.
Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant
with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to
perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is
typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be
creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at
least the next lower grade level.
Examples of specialized experience at the GS-07 level may include:
performing a variety of administrative assignments including:
managing key staff activities; coordinating large meetings;
providing complex information to customers; researching data for
complex correspondence and reports on a variety of administrative
matters.
PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
In addition to meeting experience or education requirements,
applicants for these positions must show possession of the following
skills: 40 words per minute typing speed.
