 1 vacancy - Arcata, CA National Marine Fisheries Service is dedicated to stewardship of our
nation's living marine resources and habitat through scientific
research, management and enforcement. NMFS provides effective
stewardship to benefit the nation through domestic and international
programs supporting coastal communities that depend upon the
resources, while providing safe and healthy seafood to consumers and
recreational opportunities.
This position is in the Protected Resources Division of the National
Marine Fisheries Service, Southwest Region. There is one vacancy
which may be filled as a ZP-482-02/03 Fishery Biologist or as a ZP-
401-02/03 Natural Resource Management Specialist.

Major Duties

Incumbent will perform consultations on the affect on salmonids on
projects requested by various federal action agencies in accordance
with Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act; review biological
assessments developed by action agencies or their representatives;
and make field visits and conduct meetings to gather information
necessary to render a biological opinions.

Substitution of Education for Experience:


ZP-02: One year of directly related graduate-level education -OR-


superior academic achievement.




ZP-03: Three years of progessively higher level graudate education


leading to Ph.D degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree.




Internal candidates must meet the time-in-grade requirements as well


as the required specialized experience.The basic educational requirements for both series are listed

ZP-482 FISHERY BIOLOGIST




Basic Requirements: A. Successful completion of a full 4-year


course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a


bachelor's or higher degree with a major in biological science that


included:




At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology,


ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna,


oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of


fishery biology; and




At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects


as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy,


physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology,


genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in


aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when


appropriate.)

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a


major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of


which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12


semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above,


plus appropriate experience or additional education.






ZP-401 NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST




Basic Requirements: A. Successful completion of a full 4-year


course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a


bachelor's or higher degree with a major in biological sciences,


agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related


disciplines appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a


major (24 semester hours), as shown in A above, plus appropriate


experience or additional education.




If you are qualifying for this position based on Superior Academic


Achievement (SAA), you must meet ONE of the following: 1) CLASS


STANDING - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating


class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the


College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration,


based on completed courses. In order to be creditable under this


provision, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a


curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled; OR 2)


GRADE-POINT AVERAGE (GPA) - Applicants must have a grade-point


average of (a) 2.9 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on


their official transcripts, or as computed based on 4 years of


education, or as computed based on courses completed during the


final two years of the curriculum; OR (b) 3.5 or higher out of a


possible 4.0 (B+ or better) based on the average of the required


courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the


major field completed during the final two years of the curriculum;


OR 3) ELECTION TO MEMBERSHIP IN A NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC HONOR SOCIETY -


Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in a


national honor society recognized by the Association of College


Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be


used to meet the requirements of this provision. You must provide
