Qualifications:

* Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering

* 1-3 years experience in the field of digital design

* Fluent in VHDL

* Familiar with FPGA Synthesis/Simulation tools (i.e. Synplicity, ModelSim,
Xilinx/Altera Compilers)

* Familiar with C

* Familiar with Schematic capture tools (i.e. OrCAD)


Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Data Acquisition and/or Telemetry Group Leads apply state-of-the-art electrical, electronic, communications or computer engineering disciplines to system design and development processes used in underwater sonar and oil exploration and monitoring equipment. The work pertains primarily to electronic circuits, circuit elements, equipment, systems and associated phenomena concerned with acoustical wave energy or electrical information for purposes such as communication, computation, sensing, control, measurement and navigation. Major activities include analog and digital electronics as well as extensive use of field programmable gate arrays and associated design and synthesis tools.

Essential Functions:

1. Implement assigned projects and project tasks to provide electronic engineering solutions including: electronic designs, components engineering, software engineering, electronic packaging and automatic test equipment design for assigned project.
2. Ensure that assigned project tasks are completed, meet established technical and schedule requirements and comply with company’s quality system procedures. Identify and report quality problems in the assigned areas and recommend corrective action and/or alternative solutions to correct abnormal problems or trends that could jeopardize achievement of cost or schedule objectives.
3. Provide system test and evaluation support including input to test plans and procedures.
4. Prepare engineering drawings and documents.
5. Investigate the root cause of quality problems. Review related documentation including technical status, forecast technical needs and make recommendations for appropriate changes as necessary to meet objectives.
6. Develop and prepare tradeoff models and candidates for evaluation.
7. Review quality trends; conduct thorough design analyses including interface design, models, equipment prototypes and R&D test tools of assigned project; interface with other technical personnel on quality issues.
8. Implement the procedures necessary to evaluate the design activities and to ensure conformance with customer requirements, company standards and sound engineering practices including quality systems procedures.
9. Select materials necessary to support the design and to prevent or reduce defects.
10. Develop requirements and provide technical support for maintenance of technical tools, laboratories and test equipment as required on assigned programs.
11. Perform failure analyses and document results.
12. Prepare design review material in support of PDR, CDR, FDR and technical audits for assigned designs.
13. Implement internal technical and engineering practices and procedures.
14. Promote cordial relationships and foster and maintain a favorable business profile with current and prospective customers, vendors, co-workers and other professionals.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. May perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

Education and Experience:

1. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Computer or Communications Engineering or other related scientific discipline is required. In special circumstances knowledge gained through engineering related work experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
2. Experience preferred, but not required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Relevant knowledge in electronic, digital, electronic control systems, electrical power and circuit designs, sonar and signal processing or instrumentation design and analysis.
2. Strong analytic and communication skills.
3. Requires the ability to interpret and communicate engineering plans and specifications. Sound knowledge of engineering theory and design criteria.
4. Excellent computer skills; ability to comprehend new hardware/software applications.
5. Ability to write a concise report of findings.
6. Effective human relation skills are essential.
7. Ability to speak, read and write the English language.
8. Ability to motivate others; sound effective listening skills; pays attention to details; ability to work under pressure; and ability to meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:

1. Exerts up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
2. Employee regularly sits while using upper body movements including arms, hands and fingers operating computer equipment and other office equipment.
3. Employee occasionally reaches with hands and arms in moving tools equipment and/or products as needed.

Other Work Conditions and Requirements:

1. Employee works in a quiet to moderately noisy environment.
2. Travel may be required for several days on short notice via auto/air/rail.
3. Testing aboard ship may be required from time to time.

Network Analysis:

1. Interacts with the engineering department and other administrative staff.
