About the Position: PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires moderate to heavy physical effort in the lifting and handling of objects weighing from 75 to 220 pounds. Work requires frequent standing, walking, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, stooping, and frequent arm and leg movement to manipulate tractor controls. Occasional climbing is involved.



WORKING CONDITIONS: Works is performed outside being subject to discomfort from long periods of exposure to hot, cold, or rainy weather. Subject to cuts, bruises, scrapes, sprains, and broken bones. Must be able to work holidays and some weekends.



NOTE: Incumbent must be able to obtain and retain a valid state drivers license & a valid government operator's license. May be required to transport others in and around cemetery.

Major Duties

Operates a 2.5 ton dump truck; 1.5 ton pick-up truck to prepare gravesites. Transports lowering devices, hand and power tools, chairs, carrying sticks, safety chains, grave greens, planks, grave covers, and other light equipment to and from various locations within cemetery grounds. Prepares grave for interment services by digging graves to proper dimensions using a pick and shovel. Back fills grave sites using shovel and hand tamper; levels grave sites and replaces floral items on graves; fills in sunken graves and resods the grave. Assists in disposing of headstones and smoothing out headstones having chips using specified tools/equipment. Shovels snow from building and internment service areas. Cleans vehicles, equipment and workshop bay areas. Operates portable gas operated pressure washer to clean headstones. Sets up for special ceremonies in such areas as the amphitheater and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Performs seasonal tasks such as ice control, snow and leaf removal.

Trades and Labor Must be able to manipulate tractor controls. Must be able to maneuver both the tractor and cart in confined areas such as between shrubs and trees. Must have knowledge of tractor operating characteristics such as tractor gears, power ratios, braking and turning capacities, and operating speeds.




Skill in safety using hand tools such as pick, shovel, hand tamper, water pressure machine, and air hammer.




Skill in manipulating tractor controls for smooth starting, stopping and maneuvering the cushman-type truckster.




Knowledge of State and Government motor regulations.

Must be able to stand for long periods of time; or recurring activities such as bending, crouching, stooping, stretching and reaching. Work requires standing, stooping, bending, climbing, crawling, and kneeling for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. Worker may lift and move materials weighing up to 40 pounds and, occasionally heavier items with assistance. Possess and maintain the physical ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds.
