A Clinical Pharmacist spends a majority of time practicing in a major specialty (e.g. medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, spinal cord injury, ambulatory care, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, medical research, etc).

Major Duties

Pharmacist positions within the Department of Veterans Affairs provide a full range of Pharmaceutical services.  Pharmacists must provide a wide range of prescriptions to inpatients and outpatients.  Provide drug information to medical and nursing staff.  Develop, conduct and coordinate an ongoing in-service education program for the nursing, pharmacy and medical staff.  Pharmacists are responsible for the management of the unit dose, automatic replenishment of ward stock, inpatient controlled substance destruction and discharge medication counseling programs.  The Miami Medical Center pharmaceutical department provides services to 36 ICU beds, 199 psychiatric beds, 268 medical beds, 183 surgical beds 101 extended care beds, 16 special immunology beds, 36 spinal cord injury beds and 240 nursing home beds.  Supervisory positions will directly be responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating the performance of (16) GS-11 pharmacists, (2) GS-6 lead technicians and (12.5) GS-5 pharmacy technicians.  He/she will also supervise all phases of operation in the pharmacy section; assist in the development of annual service budget by determining resource requirements; maintains a productive work environment; and monitors leave administration.  Supervisory positions will carry a hospital beeper at all times during tour of duty or on-call status.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

1. United States Citizenship

2. English Language Proficiency

3. Graduate of a degree program in pharmacy from an approved college or university.  The degree program must have been approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE), or prior to the establishment of ACPE, have been a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).

4. Licensure.  Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the Unites States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.  The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

For the GS-12 Clinical Pharmacist: Experience or Education.  In addition to Basic Requirements completion of one of the following:

1.  The equivalent of 1 year of experience at the GS-11 grade levels.

2.  Completion of a 6-year Pharm. D. or formal post-baccalaureate (M.S., Pharm. D.) hospital oriented degree program recognized by ACPE.

You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
