Major Duties

The Fort Collins Science Center is seeking up to 14 biological
science technicians (project leads and technicians) for the 2008
summer field season for the following projects:

SAGEBRUSH MAPPING PROJECT (Up to 8 individuals)
Duty Station: Lander, WY
Start: 2 June, 2008
Finish 15 September, 2008
This is a collaborative USGS BLM funded project. Despite current
research identifying resources requirements for many sagebrush
obligate species at local scales, a lack of methodologies to
accurately assess and monitor habitats at large scales has prevented
landscape scale management from occurring. The goal of this project
is to develop statistically rigorous mapping products to assess
habitat within the sagebrush ecosystem. We will use high resolution
remotely sensed imagery (i.e. Quickbird ~0.6 m resolution) to 'scale
up' these sagebrush models, applying them to larger landscapes.
Incumbents will be based out of the Lander BLM Field office, but
will conduct field vegetation assessments work across shrub-steppe
habitats of Wyoming. Good knowledge of shrub-steppe vegetation would
be an asset.

INVASIVE PLANTS OCCURANCE MODELLING PROJECT (Up to 6 individuals)
Duty Station: Lander, WY
Start: 2 June, 2008
Finish 15 September, 2008
This is a collaborative USGS BLM funded project. The rapid increase
in oil and gas exploration and development has a significant
potential to alter not only the distribution and abundance of sage-
grouse and other wildlife but also change the underlying ecosystem
dynamics sustaining their habitats. The goal of this project is to
examine natural and anthropogenic factors influencing spread of
invasive and noxious plant species. We will collect vegetation data
to construct a model that identifies the drivers, pathways of
change, and the primary changes in sagebrush ecosystems that
potentially result from oil and gas development. Incumbents will be
based out of the Lander BLM Field office, but will conduct field
vegetation assessments work across shrub-steppe habitats of Wyoming.

FOR EACH OF THE ABOVE LISTED DUTY LOCATIONS, TECHNICIANS WILL BE
REQUIRED TO CONDUCT SOME OR ALL OF THE BELOW LISTED TASKS:

1) Perform standard BBS songbird point/transect counts; 2) perform
transect surveys counting sage-grouse droppings; 3) identify and
measure grassland vegetation, and possibly conduct clippings within
plots; 4) live-trap and identify prairie small mammals; 5) data
entry using excel or access databases; 6) trap, radio-collar and
conduct radio-telemetry of sage-grouse; 7) monitor Mountain Plover
breeding success and behavioral responses, including conducting
point counts and nest searches; 8) drive 4x4 truck to access the
field sites; 9) potentially long hikes to field sites; 10) assist
with planning and implementing sampling designs; 11) develop work
field work schedules; and/or 12) navigate using GPS technology and
GIS software (ArcMap).

These positions will be employed by the Biological Resources
Discipline, Ft. Collins Science Center, Ft. Collins, CO.

--Incumbent must posses or be able to obtain a valid state driver's
license in order to
be considered for this position.

hours/135 quarter hours) plus 3 months lab or field work

experience.

GG-6: 1 year 9 months field party experience, OR 4 years sub-

professional experience, OR 4 years college study related to biology

plus 3 months of lab or field work experience.

professional experience, OR 5 years college study (with 18 hours of

graduate level course work or equivalent) plus 3 months of lab or

field work experience.

substituted for the 3 months of field and/or laboratory experience.

The supplemental standard does not allow for crediting combinations

of experience and education to satisfy minimum grade level

requirements.

Substitution of Education for Experience:

Education successfully completed in an accredited college or

university may be substituted for the experience requirements at the

various grade levels as specified in the following:

GG-5. College work related to the field of employment which

includes successful completion of at least 3 years (90 semester/135

quarter hours) of post high school education in an accredited

college, junior college, or technical institute which included at

least 24 semester/36 quarter hours in any combination of courses

such as biological or physical science, engineering, or any branch

of mathematics. To qualify at this level, individuals must also have

3 months of field and/or laboratory work experience.

GG-6. College work related to the field of employment which

includes successful completion of at least 4 years (120 semester/180

individuals must also have 3 months of field and/or laboratory

experience and satisfy requirements in this regard as stated at the

GG-5 level. When evaluating a candidate's academic record,

consideration should be given to the extent to which the courses

contributed to his/her basic knowledge of the specific field

involved in the position. A total of 5 years of related college

coursework, the sum of which does not exceed requirements for an

undergraduate degree, does not meet qualification requirements for

GG-7. In order to be acceptable at the GG-7 level, the 5 years of

college work related to the field of employment must include 18

hours of graduate level coursework in the biological or physical

sciences and/or engineering.

If you are qualifying based on education, you are required

to provide a transcript (copy acceptable) or list of coursework with

credits earned and grades by the closing date of this announcement.

This proof may be emailed, faxed, mailed or hand delivered to the

servicing Human Resources office (see 'Contact Information').

announcement will result in disqualification from further

consideration. It is important that you maintain a current/valid

e-mail address so that we may reach you.
