Job Listing: SQL Server DBA

TEKsystems has partnered with an Atlanta based home improvement retail chain to offer a position as a SQL Database Administrator. This company offers a great work environment and cutting edge technology. This position is an initial 9 month contract with possibility of extension. There is always possibility of converting to permanent employment with this client. This position is located in 75/285 intersection in North Atlanta.

The business need for this position focuses around database upgrades. A new initiative with this client is to get all databases up to the most current version. This will encompass UDB, DB2, Informix, and SQL Server. An individual in this role will have primary responsibility for upgrading all existing SQL 2000 instances to 2005. This experience will add to the marketability of any DBA as SQL 2008 is coming out soon and SQL 2000 is only going to be supported for a limited amount of time moving forward.

Our client has given us a desired profile for candidates for this position. An ideal candidate will have 7+ years of SQL Server administration with 4+ years in a production environment. Due to the circumstances of this project, there will be heavy troubleshooting and any cross-platform experience is a plus. This client also uses Informix and MySQL. Experience engineering Access as a front end for SQL Server is a plus.

These upgrades will involve following a detailed plan and making sure that any pre-requisite steps are performed, the upgrade is successfully implemented, and post-upgrade verification is complete. For each application team, the upgrade will happen on lower life cycles first, then once all verification is complete the dba will schedule and perform the upgrade in production. Production upgrades and some high profile lower life cycles will need to occur during night time scheduled maintenance windows. A focus of this position will be the post-upgrade documentation.
