The Birmingham VA Medical Center is a 313-bed acute tertiary care facility located in the historic Southside district of the city. The facility provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. The medical center serves as a referral center for this population area with 144 operating beds.

Birmingham, Alabama is located in the heart of the Southeastern United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering and higher education.



Major Duties

The incumbent will be working with an integrated Mental Health Primary Care Team providing same-day mental health consults.  The position entails occasional psychological testing, but mostly brief, evidenced-based psychotherapy and good triage skills.  The position is based on a collaborative care model and the team is located in Primary Care.  There is the opportunity for graduate, intern, and resident supervision and an academic appointment is usually arranged.The Clinical Psychologist diagnoses mental disorders, conducts psychological and/or neuropsychological assessments, treats mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provides adjunctive interventions for the treatment of mental disorders.  Incumbent provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions (mainly cognitive-behavioral; prolong exposure; interpersonal), services include marital, family and group psychotherapy.  Incumbent provides education to patients, family members and significant others regarding mental illness and other co-morbid diagnosis and treatment issues.  Incumbent provides consultation to professional staff with BVAMC, BVAMC CBOCs, and to community providers, concerning clinical assessment, finding and appropriate treatment plan for patients.

Minimum Qualifications:

1.         Citizenship:  Citizen of the United States.  (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).



2.        Education: A Doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). 

AND

         Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.



3.        Licensure:  A current, full, active and unrestricted to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.



4.        Physical Requirements:  See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.



5.        English Language Proficiency:  Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part

6.       In addition to meeting the basic requirements: The GS-11 requires the minimum qualifications listed above, the GS-12 requires at least 1 year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level, for the GS-13 the applicant must possess one (1) year of specialized experience as a psychologist equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.

 FOR:  GS-12
1.Knowledge of, and ability to apply, a wide range of professional psychological theories and assessment methods to a variety of patient populations.
2.Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies.
3.Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures.

  OR:  GS-13
1.Knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced professional psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations.
2.Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
3.Knowledge of clinical research literature.

Specialized Experience includes collaborating with team members to provide an interdisciplinary approach to care; assessment and treatment of veterans who are experiencing symptoms related to combat, sexual assault, or other trauma-related events; and personality and intelligence assessment, consultation, and supervision of practicum or internship trainees.

You can receive credit for education received outside the United States if you provide evidence that it is comparable to an accredited educational institution in the United States when you apply.
You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You must have a certification, licensure, or registration credentials in License in any state to practice psychology at the Doctoral Level.

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
