The Eastern Kansas Health Care System (EKHCS) Weight Management Program Coordinator has full responsibility for administering all aspects of the local initiative to support the health and well-being of the veteran population and the employees who care for them. 

This is a full time permanent position at the Colmery O'Neil VA Medical Center, Topeka, KS.

Tour of duty: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Appointment is contingent upon applicant meeting qualifications and the determination of the Professional Standards Board.

Major Duties

The Eastern Kansas Health Care System (EKHCS) Weight Management Program Coordinator has full responsibility for administering all aspects of the local initiative to support the health and well-being of the veteran population and the employees who care for them.  This involves leading an interdisciplinary team who is responsible for the weight management program, both for veterans and employees.  Duties include, but are not limited to: serves as a weight management specialist and resources for Nutrition and Food Service (NFS) throughout the VISN and facility; acts as resource person for Nutrition & Food Service Central Office, Washington, D.C. on weight management program policies and projects; utilizes effective written and oral communication skills to promote and maintain effective working relationships with all faculty and significant parties at the national, state and local level; knowledge of more complex investigative processes and techniques in order to direct or participate in the design of studies, collect data, conduct statistical analysis, interpret findings, and translate results into written and oral communications; ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, analyze organizational problems, and develop and implement effective solutions; performs, under general administrative supervision with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, work of high complexity, patient load and responsibility; plans and coordinates activities covering a broad range of the nutrition and food service programs a individual or multiple site; conducts regular meetings with staff and keeps minutes of the meetings; teaches weight management classes for veterans and staff; keeps track of data and monitors trend information for reporting; and, counsels patients in an inpatient and outpatient setting to promote health and wellness through weight control.  At the lower level, incumbent will perform the duties described for the full performance level position, but with closer supervision and guidance.

Special Note for Current Employees: 

All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on October 1, 2006, are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.  Employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, must meet the licensure/certification/registration requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels.

Basic Requirement for All Grades: 

A.  Citizenship.  Citizenship of the United States.  (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

B.  Education (PROVIDE COPY OF TRANSCRIPT).  The individual must have earned a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, and fulfilled each of the following criteria:

     (1)  Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE).

    (2)  Completed a CADE accredited supervised practice program.

     (3)  Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing branch of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

C.  Registration (PROVIDE COPY OF REGISTRATION).    

        (1)  All applicants must be registered with the CDR.

        (2)  Non-registered applicants who otherwise meet the minimum requirements in the basic qualification standard may be appointed as a graduate dietitian.  Failure to obtain CDR registration during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment.  This may result in termination of employment. 

Creditable Experience: 

Knowledge of Current Professional Dietitian Practices: To be creditable, experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with current professional dietetics practice.  This may be evidenced by one or more of the following:



        1.  The equivalent of 1 year of active professional practice.  Active professional practice means paid/non-paid employment as a registered dietitian.



        2.  Academic course work leading to an advanced graduate degree in nutrition or a related health care field.  PROVIDE COPY OF TRANSCRIPT

Experience is only creditable if it is post-registration experience as a registered dietitian directly related to the position to be filled, i.e., the clinical dietitian must have relevant clinical nutrition healthcare experience.  Qualifying experience must also be at a level comparable to dietetic experience at the next lower level.

The dietitian program coordinator provides management, professional, and technical support in planning, organizing, and coordinating specific aspects of the nutritional care program for multiple sites, or is responsible for multiple aspects of the nutritional care and food service program, which may include, but is not limited to, clinical nutrition management, quality management coordination, food safety coordination, food service system computer coordination, or any combination thereof.  The dietitian program coordinator does not have supervisory responsibilities but is responsible for broad program management.  In addition to completion of 1 year of creditable experience comparable to the next lower grade level directly related to the position to be filled, registered dietitians assigned to these positions must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics necessary to satisfactorily complete the following duties:



      a.  Performs, under general administrative supervision with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, work of unusual difficulty and responsibility.



      b.  Serves as a consultant within the nutrition and food service and with other facility health care staff in evaluating health care delivery to patients.



      c.  Plans and coordinates activities covering a broad range of the nutrition and food service programs at individual or multiple sites.


You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
