JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Analytical Chemist
I. Primary Function:
The Analytical Chemist analyzes the chemical nature and make-up of substances using a variety of analytical techniques, methods and instrumentation.
II. Duties:
A. Performs analytical testing to: detect and identify contaminates and compounding errors in formulations; evaluate product failures; perform quality assurance on raw materials; and assess integrity of products from field and aged studies.
B. Interprets data and adheres to guidelines on documentation when recording data.
C. Develops reports based on scientific findings.
D. Performs routine maintenance on analytical instruments as needed.
III. Knowledge/Skills:
A. Analytical Chemistry/Organic Chemistry/Polymer Science
B. Working knowledge of TGA, DSC and FTIR instrumentation. A general knowledge about GC/MS is preferred as well.
C. Material processing with emphasis on roofing and waterproofing products.
D. Use of personal computer, instrumentation computers and associated software.
E. Oral and written communication skills to report analytical testing results, monthly progress reports, memos to Management and others in the company, plant and industry, etc.
E. Project management skills and the ability to manage multiple activities
simultaneously.
F. Ability to convey technical information to non-technical people.

1. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)
2. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
3. Attenuated Total Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR/FTIR)
4. Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS)
5. Personal Computers
6. Instrument Computers
7. Calculators
B. Materials -
1. Polymers - EPDM, butyl, neoprene, epichlorohydrin, TPO, PVC, PP, etc.
2. Rubber, Plastic, Adhesive, Tape Compounding Ingredients/additives
3. Other chemicals required for system component performance
C. Data Used -
1. Lab and trial reports in LIMS data management system
2. Formulations (currently in FORMMAN),
3. ASTM Standards
4. Technical Data Bulletins
5. Purchasing Specifications
6. Standard Operating Procedures
7. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
D. Interactions with Others -
1. Co-workers
2. Internal and external customers
3. Production Personnel
4. Carlisle Management
V. Work Environment:
Mainly office and laboratory but occasional trips to the on-campus plants may be necessary.
VI. Time Worked:
A. Days/Hours Worked - Monday – Friday, 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.; 40 Hours/Week
The chemist must interface with other departments and suppliers that work similar hours. Forty hours per week is a minimum.
B. Comments -
The analytical chemist is basically "on-call" at all times if a major problem occurs with a formula that is not routinely handled by the plant(s).

VIII. Supervisory Duty: The chemist has no direct supervisory responsibility.
IX. Educational Requirements:
A. Education -
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or related physical science discipline.
B. Equivalency -
Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree which included coursework in Chemistry with minimum 3 years of experience and instruction in rubber and/or plastics compounding and processing.
X. Experience: Zero to 5 years industrial experience in rubber or plastics compounding and processing or analytical laboratory.
