About the Position: The position is under the direct supervision of the Dental Army Command (DENTAC) First Sergeant.



Physical Demands: The work is predominantly sedentary.

Work Environment: Work is performed in typical office & meeting room environments.



The Dental Activity includes several subordinate segments of similar but different specialized functions which are further subdivided. Two separate clinics are part of the command. The usual formal procedures are established to govern procedural matters, e.g., suspense procedures, completion of forms, and chain of command. The commander directs activities primarily through face-to-face contacts (staff meetings, visits, etc.), and by telephone.

Major Duties

Serves as secretary & personal assistant to the Commander & Exec Officer. Receives calls, maintains calendars, schedules appointments & conferences without prior clearance & reads incoming publications/regs/directives. Establishes/maintains Commander?s personal files. Reviews materials prepared for Commander?s signature for regulatory compliance, grammar, format & command policies. Arrange/attend conferences/briefings, recording minutes/summaries. Receives incoming mail. Reviews outgoing correspondence for accuracy, adherence & Commanders policies. Assists subordinate clerical personnel. Coordinates travel for the Commander & visiting dignitaries. Composes correspondence on own initiative, using knowledge of the Commanders writing style. Personally signs and distributes administrative correspondence in accordance with specific authority delegated by the Commander. Justifies and orders office supplies, equipment, forms & publications. They will use office automation hard/software.

General Schedule SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of experience directly related to the occupation and equivalent to the next lower grade level or its equivalent level. Education is not creditable, however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.


The ideal candidate for this position will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:


Knowledge of clerical & administrative principles and practices to perform duties such as keeping the Commanders calendar, follow-up on conference commitments gathering background data, providing advice to clerical personnel, and making travel arrangements.


Ability to coordinate the non-professional administrative work of the office with other offices, and to advise on procedures, regulations, completing reports, etc.


Knowledge of scheduling Command conferences, notifying attendees, preparing agenda, following up on actions initiated, recording & coordinating commitments made by command, and composing minutes of committee meetings and distributing them.


Skill in Microsoft office software and hardware; type, assemble and process correspondence.


Knowledge of grammar, sentence structure, punctuation and spelling sufficient to review correspondence for accuracy and to compose delegated correspondence.


Skill to take and transcribe written notes, and to transcribe from tape recordings.
