About the Position: Physical Examination Required: The personnel action to fill this position will not be processed until the results of the medical examination are evaluated and certified as meeting the requirements of this position.
Drug Test Required: The personnel action to fill this position will not be processed until the results of the laboratory drug test are certified as negative.
THIS POSITION IS COVERED BY THE CIVILIAN DRUG ABUSE TESTING PROGAM. INCUMBENT IS REQUIRED TO SIGN A DA FORM 5019-R, "CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT FOR CERTAIN CIVILIAN POSITIONS IDENTIFIED AS CRITICAL UNDER THE DRUG ABUSE TESTING PROGRAM," OR A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU).
2nd Mates on the Dredge JADWIN are in charge of a navigational watch 6 hours on and 6 hours off while dredging the navigation channels.

Major Duties
As 2nd Mate, stands a regular watch and is responsible for the continued operation maintenance and safety of the dredge during the shift. Exercises supervision over the shift crew normally ranging from 5 to 8 employees, including deck equipment operators, welder, tender operator, pipelineman, deckhands, etc. Instruct and trains subordinates in established procedures and methods and observes work for accuracy, adequacy, and compliance with, instructions. Supervises the crew in setting anchors and making up pipeline. Works with and directs assigned crew and other necessary help in the movement, replacements and repairs of pipeline. Directs and checks work of repairmen in making repairs and replacements to cables, sheaves, dustpan, rubber sleeves, etc. Is responsible for correct maintenance of the dredge, which consists of general cleaning, chipping surfaces painting, and making minor woodwork and metal repairs. Assists in conducting fire, lifeboat, and man-overboard drills.

Trades and Labor Screen out Elements: Must be able to do the work of a 2ND Mate Pipeline Dredge (PLD), Class I, XH-5784-09 without more than normal supervision.
