Major Duties

Aviation Safety Inspectors (ASI's) apply a broad knowledge of the aviation industry, the general principles of aviation safety, and the Federal laws, regulations, and policies affecting aviation. In addition, they apply intensive technical knowledge and skill in the operation, maintenance and/or modification of aircraft used in civil aviation. ASI's develop, administer and enforce regulations relating to aviation safety. They also provide advice and guidance to many segments of the aviation industry and airmen in the interest of aviation safety.
General Aviation Operations Inspectors: General Aviation Operations Inspectors are responsible for single and multiengine aircraft (including multi-engine aircraft over 12,500 pounds gross takeoff weight) used for pleasure, air taxi service, industry, and agriculture. Some of their duties are to: * Examine airmen (pilots, flight instructors, etc.) for initial and continuing certification; * Evaluate airmen training programs, equipment, and facilities; * Evaluate the operations of air taxis and similar commercial aviation operations for adequacy of facilities, equipment, procedures, and overall management to ensure safe operation of the aircraft; and * Investigate and report on accidents, incidents, and violations. Frequent travel is required in support of the Designee Quality Assurance Program.

Veterans' Preference

Your application package should include:
1. A Standard Form 171, "Application for Federal Employment (6/88 or later edition);" OR an Optional Form 612, "Optional Application for Federal Employment;" OR a resume. All applications/resumes must include name, social security number, address, phone number, announcement number, country of citizenship, veterans' preference information (with proof, if applicable), and descriptions of relevant work experience, education, and other information, such as awards, honors, and special accomplishments.
NOTE: If you choose to submit the Standard Form 171, you are not required to complete questions 38-47.

2. FAA Form 3330.42, "Request for Promotion Consideration and Acknowledgment," which is used to notify you of the receipt, rating, and referral status of your application. You should complete Parts I, III, and IV, and place the form on top of your application package.

3. On a separate sheet of bond paper, you may provide additional information regarding your possession of the KSAO's for this position. (Optional - Not required, however, it provides applicants the opportunity to describe portions of their experience, training, education, etc., which are directly related to the KSAO.) The information will be used for ranking of applicants after basic eligibility is determined. For each KSAO listed above, provide the following information: 1) Work Experience: Describe the tasks you have performed which demonstrate the KSAO, giving the dates, places, and positions where you did this. 2) Education, Training and/or Awards: Describe training, education, and/or awards you have received which demonstrate the KSAO, including the dates you received the training, education, and/or awards. 3) Other Information: Such as volunteer experience, hobbies, etc., which demonstrates the KSAO, giving the dates and places where you did this.

"Request for Promotion Consideration and Acknowledgement" FAA Form 3330.42 should be completed and placed on top of the application package. This form is used to notify applicants of the status of their application.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Reference - Individual Qualifications Standard for Aviation Safety Series positions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal Aviation Regulations violations in the last 5 years;
2. Valid State driver's license;
3. Fluency in the English language;
4. No chemical dependencies of drug abuse that could interfere with job performance; and
5. High school graduate or equivalent.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
In addition to the minimum requirements, by the closing date of this announcement, applicants must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level. The specialized experience must meet one of the following option specific requirements, in this case General Aviation Operations.
GENERAL AVIATION OPERATIONS:
Specialized Experience: (Both of the following)
1. Pilot experience that provided a comprehensive knowledge of operations requirements, facilities, practices, procedures, and flight activities of aircraft; and
2. A minimum of 1,500 flight hours.

Recency of Experience: (All of the following)
1. Some aviation work experience within the last 10 years;
2. A minimum of 300 flight hours in the last 3 years; and
3. A minimum 1,000 flight hours in the last 5 years.

Certificates and Ratings: (All of the following)
1. Airline Transport Pilot Certificate or Commercial Pilot Certificate with instrument airplane rating;
2. Single and multiengine land airplane ratings; and
3. Valid Flight Instructor Certificate with single and multiengine airplane and instrument airplane ratings.

Other Requirements:
1. Professional flying skill as demonstrated in a flight check to Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Instrument Rating standard; and 2. Not more than 2 flying accidents in the last 5 years.

Medical Requirements:
1. Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read without strain printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses permitted);
2. Have the ability to hear the conversational voice (hearing aid permitted); and
3. Not have any physical condition that would cause them to be a hazard to themselves or others or that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in a variety of aircraft.

In addition, applicants must possess a valid first class medical certificate (applicants must submit copy) in accordance with FAA regulations; and pass recurrent medical examinations.

Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program
This position is covered by the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
