This is a seasonal position not-to-exceed 1039 hours per year. Approximate dates of employment are June through September 2008. Work schedule is full time, 40 hours per week. Government housing may be available. Located approximately 40 miles north of San Francisco, this is a high cost of living area. Major Duties: The incumbent will assist with implementation of the Invasive Plant Species Early Detection Volunteer Program for the San Francisco Bay Area Network (SFAN) of National Parks. Under the direction of the SFAN Natural Resource Specialist the incumbent will recruit, train, and supervise a team of volunteers to locate and document the presence of invasive non-native plant species. The incumbent will also be responsible for scheduling volunteer field work, maintaining equipment, training others in methods and equipment use, and implementing a safety program for the team.
Major Duties
The incumbent will assist with implementation of the Invasive Plant Species Early Detection Volunteer Program for the San Francisco Bay Area Network (SFAN) of National Parks. Under the direction of the SFAN Natural Resource Specialist the incumbent will recruit, train, and supervise a team of volunteers to locate and document the presence of invasive non-native plant species. The incumbent will also be responsible for scheduling volunteer field work, maintaining equipment, training others in methods and equipment use, and implementing a safety program for the team. Field responsibilities will include navigating to remote locations by foot or vehicle; identifying non-native and common native plant species; following detailed protocols; and recording environmental parameters. The incumbent will handle data collection and data compilation for the program including gathering field data with paper datasheets, hand-held computers, cameras, and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices; entering data into computerized spreadsheets, databases, and Geographic Information System (GIS) programs; routinely verifying data accuracy and consistency; and performing basic data analyses. This position will be based at Point Reyes National Seashore; some travel to Pinnacles National Monument and John Muir National Historic Site may be required.The position is approximately 60% office-based, and 40% field-based. Field work will occasionally entail working in rugged terrain and/or under adverse weather conditions, and exposure to poison-oak, ticks, spiders, rattlesnakes, and stinging or biting insects. Office work may involve extended periods of sitting and using a computer.

At the GS-6 level one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level is qualifying. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and must be related to the work of the position for which application is made and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Some examples include field work identifying plants, the use of dichotomous keys, the collecting and/or cataloguing of plants, field work collecting data on invasive, nonnative plants and recruiting, training and/or leading staff or volunteers in field work. Graduate education meets the specialized experience only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying.

Basis of rating: CTAP and ICTAP eligibles will be considered well-qualified if they attain a rating of 85 out of a possible 100 points, not including veteran's preference.
