Major Duties

These vacancies are located within Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center, Memphis, Tennessee.  Incumbent(s) will receive oral and written assignments from the Building Maintenance Unit Supervisor and the Carpenter Leader who may inspect finished product for compliance with VA construction standards, NFPA codes, objectives, timeliness, and quality of workmanship.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

construct, alter, install, repair, and modify metal wall structures, metal door frames and doors, and metal window frames and windows
read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, manufacturer's manuals and specifications
select proper materials, equipment, and tools to complete assigned tasks
skilled  operation of a full range of woodworking and related machinery such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses
install sheet rock on metal stud walls as well as patch damages on existing walls
install and repair suspension type acoustical ceiling
repair and install ceramic and mosaic tiles of floors and walls
repair wooden and metal furniture
install signage, pictures, plagues, wall-mounted medical devices for exam rooms, mailboxes, etc.
remove and install door locks, door closures, and security screens, glass in glass partitions and glass windows
Tour of Duty:  Full time, Monday-Friday  8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications









Although a specific length of experience is not required, qualified applicants must show the ability to do the work of a GS-09 journeyman Carpenter.  The ability to receive instruction (oral and written), perform tasks assigned, and work independently as well as with others.
