The incumbent will serve as a staff dental assistant for more routine patient care and perform some complex patient procedures under general supervision of more experienced dental assistants or dental supervisor. The incumbent will also assist the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and perform other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision.
Major Duties
The incumbent will set up operatory for planned dental procedure after conferring with the dentist and clean dental unit for timely turnover. Pass instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently. Keep operative field clear of debris and retract oral tissues effectively. Prepare dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturer’s instructions. Accomplish all intra-operative procedures within standard infection control protocols. Assist in routine general and specialized dental procedures, such as oral surgery, endodontics, and periodontics. Incumbent will pour impressions and prepare study models when required. Make final denture impression trays and prepare bite rims. The incumbent will also assist patients in scheduling appointments.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Must be a citizen of the United States. Six months experience that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. OR Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Accreditation that included a course in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality; radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting; or practical nurse training approved by the appropriate State, territory, or District of Columbia accrediting body. Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
