Job Listing: Machinist

We need your help to further critical biomedical research. Our client, a non-profit medical research organization that ranks as one of the nation's largest philanthropies, is in need of a Scientific Machinist. This position performs a variety of highly skilled and precision functions in a dynamic and interactive environment in collaboration with a scientific instrumentation development group. Duties include; Provide highly-skilled machining, prototyping, and assembly services.Design, fabricate, install, maintain, and repair new or unique scientific laboratory devices, components, and precision instruments for research purposes.Consult with equipment end-users regarding design and application.Set up and maintain precision tools and instruments to produce components. Ensure that all machine and development areas are maintained in an orderly manner.Test and debug prototypes and finished assemblies.Fabricate specialized tooling, holding fixtures, and unique assembly tools.Assist in material selection. Order, manage inventory to ensure on-hand stock of commonly-used materials, fasteners, etc.Ensure the safety of all users in the shop.Read, modify, and interpret blue print and CAD drawings.
Provide recommendations to designers in terms of cost reduction, manufacturability, ease-of-assembly, etc.Inspect and analyze scientific equipment and diagnose trouble or malfunctions and make necessary adjustments to minimize service interruptions and equipment downtime.Assist in the validation of new equipment and automation.

Preferred Qualifications: Minimum of 5 years experience as a machinist. Previous employment titles of R&D Machinist, Prototype Machinist, Die Maker, or All-Around Machinist are appropriate titles for candidates searching for new opportunities. Experience working in an active laboratory environment and working with cutting-edge scientific technology/equipment preferred.
Education
B.S. in Engineering, Laboratory Science, Mathematics; preferred but not required
Skills and Abilities:
Must be proficient in the use of standard machine tools such as CNC and Manual milling machines, engine lathes, grinders, band saws, sheet metal forming and punching equipment.Experience with developing instrumentation or equipment for vacuum applications a plusAbility to work independently and plan work with minimal supervisionAbility to interact with HHMI and non-HHMI personnel at all levels.Ability to review plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, drawings or layouts.Ability to oversee users of the shared machining facility
Ability to provide equipment users with a safe work environment.Familiarity with 3D CAD, mechanical engineering concepts, materials science preferred.
