Position Title: Senior Application Engineer
Reports To: Applications Engineering Manager
Broad Functional Description:
Provide mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic concepts along with pricing for proposal generation. The scope includes: complete mechanical and electrical concepts for a machine or total system including all support equipment, installation, etc. The position will require customer, vendor, and engineering contact, customer specification interpretation, complete technical write-up, pricing, and the creation of alternative solutions for customer needs. Quotation presentations and engineering follow-up are also required. May lead proposal activities in the absence of the application-engineering manager.
Responsibilities:
1. Participate in customer meetings at the pre-quote stage.
2. Become thoroughly familiar with customer specifications, address, and analyze customer requirements.
3. Apply standard products where applicable, research, and apply new technology as required.
4. Document technical specifications for the equipment including all concept drawings required.
5. Provide cost effective concepts for assembly test and material handling applications to meet customer needs.
6. Generate or direct the generation of the drawings, schematics or specifications required to adequately convey the machines design for both accurate pricing and presentation to the customer for technical evaluation.
7. Provide budgetary and firm price cost estimates for assembly test and material handling equipment, including manufactured and purchased components, engineering, controls and installation where applicable.
8. Review and support technical and pricing with management.
9. Meet deadline for quotation delivery to customer.
10. Maintain a complete proposal file with all the relative notes, quotes, specifications, and pricing documents necessary to describe the equipment that is being presented.
11. Participate and lead (as required) customer technical presentation. This may require travel by auto or airplane.
12. Participate in all quote follow-up required by customer.
13. Participate in the kick-off meeting from sales to project management.
14. Support project during engineering phase through concept support and design review participation.
15. Support the Application Engineering Manager in all areas of the department.
Accountable For:
1. Creativity of concept design.
2. Quality of proposals generated, accurate grammar, appearance and technical description.
3. Timeliness and completeness of proposals generated.
4. Conversion ratio measurement of proposals to orders with margins.
5. Hours and material quoted versus actual used on job.
6. Professional representation of the company in customer contact.
7. Ability to lead department on a temporary basis when needed.
Qualification
1. A great deal of technical knowledge, usually acquired through achieving a four-year college degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or other related technical field.
2. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely via both the written and spoken media. Ability to work closely with the Sales Department both internally and when involved with customers. Ability to work closely with the Engineering and Manufacturing Departments. Ability to manage others.
3. Eight years (+) experience in the design and construction of capital equipment. Extensive engineering experience can be substituted for the educational requirements.
