The Birmingham VA Medical Center is a 313-bed acute tertiary care facility located in the historic Southside district of the city. The facility provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. The medical center serves as a referral center for this population area with 144 operating beds.
Birmingham, Alabama is located in the heart of the Southeastern United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering and higher education.
Major Duties
This position is located in the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center. The incumbent will perform physical examinations on eligible veterans in order to assess their health status, evaluate existing health problems and determine eligibility for research projects. Additional duties will include: Perform screening interviews with potential research subjects, manage minor acute and stable chronic illness; prescribe, administer, and evaluate pharmacotherapeutic and non-pharmacotherapeutic regimens, adhering to research protocol for research patients; consult and collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals to recruit potential research subjects; develop outcome measures to monitor the quality of care and effectiveness of services, refer eligible patients requiring further evaluation to appropriate clinic; plan therapeutic regimens for patients that require treatment of urinary incontinence and related disorders; consult with precepting physicians on patients who do not respond to current treatment; evaluate and provide treatment for veterans with urinary and fecal incontinence and related disorders.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).
2.Education: Master’s degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNR.
3.Licensure: A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
4.Physical Standards: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
5.English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both spoken and written English.
Enhanced Qualifications:
1. One or more years of experience evaluating and managing patients with urinary and fecal incontinence.

Salary Range: 59,308.00 - 101,584.00 USD per yearThe salary will be determined by a compensation pay panel, commensurate with education and experience. A recruitment incentive may be authorized.
