POSITION:  Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist) – Patient Care Services, Primary Care, VN-0610 (Title 38) OR Physician Assistant, VN-0603 (Title 38), Patient Care Services, Primary Care

 

TOUR OF DUTY: Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, possibility of off tour hours when necessary.

Major Duties

The APN/PA will work fulltime in the Compensation & Pension section of Primary Care.  He/she adheres to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice.  Demonstrates leadership when providing care or developing programs which will improve the delivery of nursing care.  The APN/PA has prescriptive authority without co-signature for outpatient pharmaceuticals within the Scope of Practice using the current medical center formulary.

Registered Nurse, 0610, Basic Requirements:




Current active, unrestricted RN State License as a professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the U.S. or the District of Columbia
Must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
U. S. Citizenship required
Direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407 (d).
Must meet physical standards of the position.  A physical examination prior to placement may be required, including the possibility of a drug screen.
MSN or related field with a BSN and approximately 2 to 3 years of successful nursing practice is preferred.
Experience working in Compensation & Pension is preferred.

** Additional Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions:



     (a)  Nurse Practitioners.  A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, must possess a master’s degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.



     (b)  Clinical Nurse Specialists.  A clinical nurse specialist must possess a master’s degree from an academic program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE with a major in the clinical nursing specialty to which the nurse is to be assigned.



(c)      Must be licensed with prescriptive privileges.



Note:  A Professional Standards Board will determine the selectee’s starting grade level based on the applicant’s education and experience.



Physician Assistant, VN-0603, Basic Requirements:

·         Must be a Citizen of the United States. 

·         A bachelor’s degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); OR Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor’s degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician.  The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

·         Certification.  As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.  This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

·         Physical Standards.  See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

·         English Language Proficiency.  PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
