Major Duties


Attends preplanning meetings with customers and printing specialists to discuss new requirements, potential jobs, or major changes to current jobs prior to formal submission for composition and production. Provides alternative methods to customers to increase efficiency/reduce turn-around time; provides information on available testing techniques to insure network compatibility or media conversion methods; provides options on page layouts to customers and/or printing specialists. Receives on-the-job training in determining composition and printing specifications concerning paper stock, trim sizes, style of bindings, etc. Learns to estimate total composition costs. Receives copy for a wide variety of publications, e.g., technical manuals, instructions, directives in a variety of media for creation and final product output on an automated publishing system. Media include hard copy, floppy disks, 9-track magnetic tape, and direct telecommunications. Is responsible for direct coordination with activities' directive control point and/or originator of the publication when recommending changes in sentence/paragraph structure, format, or final placement of halftones, charts, tables, graphs, etc. When requested, edits publications for correct terminology, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Makes requested changes to publications previously stored in database. Utilizing sophisticated software packages and routines, assists in the design and final page layout of publications, which contain a considerable number of photographs, line drawings, tables, charts, and graphs. Utilizes software designed to store, retrieve and manipulate textual material and merger of text and graphics, media conversion, database management, etc. Recommends or selects columnar arrangements, type sizes, and spacing of final product to lower total printing costs, enhance quality of final product, improve legibility and readability, etc. Insures processing commands are properly translated; enters or changes commands, as necessary. Exercises quality control by reviewing text, page, and reproduction proofs to assure adherence to specifications. Forwards proofs to customer for approval prior to printing of jobs. Provides final products in a variety of output media. Scans illustrations; sizes, scales, enlarges, reduces, crops and positions graphics and text. Reviews completed products for content, alignment, clarity and format. Provides assistance to lower graded technicians and operators on all phases of automated publishing operations. Maintains daily records of work completed, records production costs for billing, and insures completed materials are returned to customers or distributed according to job instructions and established security procedures. Deals directly with hardware/software vendors on less complex operating problems, e.g., rebooting, reloading operating software. Serves as backup to the systems administrator and operations manager. 
Physical Efforts:
Some standing, bending, walking and carrying of light items required. There is a frequent requirement for viewing video display terminals for lengthy periods of time.
Working Conditions:
Work involves everyday risks and discomforts associated with equipment operations. Work area is climate controlled and adequately lighted. Earplugs may be worn during equipment operation; however, no special safety precautions need be observed to prevent injury during equipment operation.
