Major Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
The incumbent is responsible for the installing, troubleshooting and making repairs on various refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems, such as walk in coolers, refrigerators, ice machines, freezers, evaporating fans, window air conditioning units and similar equipment.  The incumbent assists higher graded mechanics on larger or more complex systems or equipment.  Incumbent works from oral instructions, blueprints, and work orders.  Traces and locates defects to determine the type and extent of repair needed, plans the work, selects the proper tools and testing devices, and accomplishes repairs according to accepted trade practices.

I have the basic knowledge to inspect new mechanical systems, checking function of the electronics and sequence of the equipment. Some of this experience was gained working in large commercial buildings.

C. I have worked under normal supervision of a supervisor or higher level employee accomplishing the tasks of an Air Conditioning Worker. I have satisfactorily accomplished the tasks of an Air Conditioning Worker, performing preventative maintenance and repair tasks on air conditioning equipment and refrigeration units. I have the knowledge of basic electricity gained by completion of basic electricity training courses or experience repairing and testing simple electric components such as light switches, electric fan motors, circuits, etc.; repaired, and assembled, etc., equipment under close supervision. I have performed preventive maintenance and repair tasks, such as inspection and adjustment of belt tension, inspection of damage and heat leakage, replacement of air filters, and replacement of broken gauge glasses, dials, etc.; performed minor repairs to control devices by cleaning and adjusting valves or couplings; and, worked on refrigeration systems, such as window boxes, drinking fountains, domestic refrigerators, etc. However, I do not have any experience working on a/c equipment in a large commercial building.

D. I have decided on my own which tasks should be done in maintenance and repair, such as: replacement of blown fuses and light bulbs, oiling motors, and cleaning filters and coils; policed machinery spaces - cleaning dust and dirt from machinery surfaces, etc.; read thermostats and made adjustments for temperature control.

You must have experience in air conditioning and refrigeration that demonstrates the ability to do the work of the position as described.  This experience must demonstrate a practical, working knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration and materials/equipment of the trade and the ability to assemble, install, maintain and repair systems and equipment.  It must also demonstrate the ability to read and interpret instructions and the ability to properly and safely use and maintain tools and equipment of the trade, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems related to air conditioning/refrigeration (AC/R) systems and equipment.




 




MEDICAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  The candidate must be able to do the work of the position without harm to self or others.  This work requires considerable movement around the hospital and involves bending, lifting, working from ladders and scaffolding and platforms, both in and outside buildings, and crawling through restrictive areas.  The incumbent must occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing fifty (50) pounds or more with proper equipment.  Assignments may require him/her to stand, stoop, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
