The Directorate of Emergency Services supports the installation and the Fort George G. Meade community by providing quality police, physical security, fire and emergency services as part of a force protection effort to maintain a safe & secure environment on a large federal campus. Major Duties
Patrols all areas under jurisdiction of Ft Meade .Enforce military/state animal control regs. Captures/impounds unrestrained animals. Investigates nuisance/cruelty/bite cases. Issues violation notices to violators for appearance at U.S. Magistrate Court or payment of set fine. Prepares military police reports. May be required to use lethal weapon (dart gun/shotgun, handgun) to euthanasia animals that cannot be captured. Controlled drugs have to be used to euthanasia animals. Transport animals to vet clinic for disposition. Records complaints for animal impounded, stating specific violation. Maintains records on animals impounded. Calls for law enforcement backup when animal is causing physical damage to a person & cannot be captured. Conducts long/short term. Must be able to identify animals that are sick and/or undernourished. Removal of non-domestic animals that are immediate threat to humans/domestic animals.

General Schedule SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE - Best qualified candidates for this job must show in their resume that they have training or experience which has provided the following: 1) Knowledge of military and state laws regarding animal control. 2) Knowledge of proper radio procedures. 3) Knowledge of CPR and first aid. 4) Knowledge of investigative techniques and procedures. 5) Knowledge of basic weapon safety rules and use of Cap-Chur gun and shotgun and hand gun. 6)Knowledge of euthanasia drugs. 7) Knowledge of different breeds of animals.
(8) Knowledge of illness, common diseases, and general physical condition of animals. 9) Knowledge of normal operator's maintain of motor vehicle. 10) Knowledge of and use of catch poles, traps, lariats, leases, syringe poles, and nets.
NOTES: (1) When/If you are contacted regarding your claim of federal employment status, veterans preference or education, you will be given 3 work days to provide any required documentation.
(2) Must be able to operate half-ton pickup truck with communication equipment, understand & follow proper radio procedures.
(3) On an infrequent basis be on 24-hour call in case of emergency, and carry an electronic beeper when on call.
(4)Must pass a required certification program.
(5) Must be able to get & maintain a crime records check through US Army Cid Command.
(6)Must be certified by as an Animal Control Officer (basic and advanced) and maintain certification.
(7) Must take rabies pre-exposure vaccinations as determined by the Occupational Health Nurse.
(8) Must sucessfully qualify on assigned weapons on an annual basis.
Physical Demands: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to reported violations and pursuing stray animals. Requires common physical characteristics and abilities in agility and dexterity and the strength to restrain strong active animals often weighing 125 pounds; and may have to lift the animal in and out of the vehicle.The experience described in your resume will be evaluated and screened for the Office of Personnel Management's basic qualifications requirements, and the skills needed to perform the duties of this position as described in this vacancy announcement.Education can be substituted for experience. Review the qualification requirements for specific information.Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
